To answer your question.. BMW M2s coming out after January 2, 2016 could be designed as a 2016 or 2017. If BMW chooses 2016, they can be produced in the calendar year until the end of the year. If they choose 2017... this model could be produced until the end of the 2017 calendar year.

I believe a clear example of this extended production occurred with the 1995 M3.

This would explain why the F87 suddenly disappeared from the 2016 production schedule. I still have the printout showing it for 11/15 production!

"Code 903 is generally used for cars destined for an auto show, photography for advertisement/marketing materials or similar (902 for press vehicles)."
