Some are used for road testing.. hot weather testing. we have seen some mules already... Many will be used as press cars for magazine tests I am sure.. More than likely possibly even filming for a commercial... and then finally.. I bet most of these make their way to the performance center eventually?

In the United States, for regulation purposes, government authorities allow cars of a given model year to be sold starting on January 2 of the previous calendar year. For example, this means that a 2017 model year vehicle can legally go on sale on January 2, 2016.

To answer your question.. BMW M2s coming out after January 2, 2016 could be designed as a 2016 or 2017. If BMW chooses 2016, they can be produced in the calendar year until the end of the year. If they choose 2017... this model could be produced until the end of the 2017 calendar year.

I believe a clear example of this extended production occurred with the 1995 M3.

If they're all pre development cars with camo, maybe we won't see the car revealed without caomo. Maybe they'll just have the car their with camo on and talk about it, and not reveal it. If that becomes the case, I'll be extremely let down.

Based on my own personal experience. BMW will run the first batch as a 2016 model year and then do a switch-over to 2017 model during July productions. This is common for what BMW has done in the past and I really don't see why they would do a 2017 model out of sequence from their typical production switch in July.

Really hoping the DCT is a paid upgrade and not the "free" transmission with the 6MT as a no -cost upgrade. Would rather not pay for it.

EDIT: WBS1H9C52GV351829 is the latest US produced model with a date of 9/18. Some with M Driver's Package.

It seems like they've had the car in final form for a while now if they're using cars from May as media cars. I'm betting the recent track tests are either to fine tune the ECU which they can download to these media cars before reveal or are testing optional upgrades like coilovers.

I work for the auto industry so we can attend during press events/vehicle debutes.

Last year was my first time attending and it was awesome. Free lunch, snacks, and alcohol from all the manufactures and the best part no crowds at all to see and sit in the vehicles.
