Gear ratios

Per the US press release, BMW is using the same ratios as in the m3/4. You can get two fun red-line shifts in before getting a ticket (unlike a gt350).

Final drive 3.462, 6500rpm redline, 26.58in tire height (calculated):
1st - 4.110 - 36mph
2nd - 2.315 - 64mph
3rd - 1.542 - 96mph
4th - 1.179 - 126mph
5th - 1 - 148mph
6th - 0.846 - top speed

Pretty sure they said the trans is shared. Which makes me wonder why BMW is using such a short ratio for first when these new turbo cars make so much torque. It would probably be beneficial for them to use a much taller gear that can take the car closer to the 60 mph mark to save a lower 0-60 time. OR use a short gear so first becomes mostly useless unless we all plan on rack crawling. Seriously, look at that ratio.

These ratios will work well for my favorite tracks

Not quite the same thing, but I actually switched the rear end on my M235i from a 3.08 to a 3.46 -- the transmission gear ratios are about the same.

Honestly, 3.08 was too long. 3rd took you to 110 mph (on the track). Just unnecessary. I think 3.46 is a very good compromise between stupid short gearing and tall gearing for fuel economy. Works pretty well for me.

Unless I'm missing something, the M2 will have shorter gearing than the 6MT M135i/M235i, which is probably not the worst thing for the track.

For the road however, I sometimes wish 6th gear would be a bit longer on my M135i. When cruising at higher speeds, it often feels like you're stuck in 4th gear because of the high RPMs, which gets a bit annoying on longer trips. Of course you could argue that 6th gear should be spaced like a normal gear for best possible acceleration, but on the other hand, you already run into the 250kph limiter at the end of 5th gear anyway.

I actually had time to read most of that press release, and along with some of the videos it's clear that BMW considers this car (and not the M3/M4) as having the genes of the 2002 turbo as well as the E30 M3.. And of course it's the successor to the 1M.

And oh my look at how the curb weight of these cars changed over time.

2002 Turbo - 170 hp - 1080 kg / 2381 lb

E30 M3 - 192 hp - 2865 lb

1M - 335hp - 1495 kg / 3296 lbs

M2 - 365 hp - 3450
