M2 vs 17 STI
I'm currently on a waiting list for M2 and I'm 99% set on holding onto my spot until I get my order placed, but I can't look away from 17 STI which I like the exterior design better than M2. Obviously, I can't buy both cars given my financial situation. What are you guys honest opinions on those two cars?
I don't have a family or anything and just hopped into being a young professional for a note. |

Depends what you want to pay and how long you want to wait.
STI is cheaper and more readily available and slower. M2 is more expensive and more rare and faster. If you like the look of the STI more than the M2, then it comes down to how much fun you get in either car.

Also look at the price and the value you are getting. Given the M2 cost more is it worth the extra money for that value over a 17 STI? I believe it's there. This is something to consider as cars in general depreciate but the M2 probably holds value better long-term as it's a rare car. One thing to note is the M2 currently is fairly priced at mid 50s which is a good deal for people buying at MSRP.

I had an STi ('11) before I traded in on my M235i, but I have driven the M2. The '17 Sti has a nicer interior than mine did. if you did a Stage 1 tune with the Cobb Accessport on the STI, it will be faster than the M2, for about 1K. Subies are super reliable, with a Stage 1 tune.
I see you are in FLA, so you might not need the AWD, I did living in the Toronto area. The M2 will be smoother and more refined than the STi. I had Subies for about 11 years, but have been impressed with BMW's refinement and handling. I think the M2 will hold it's value more because it is rarer. Maybe get the M2 and then an older STi sometime. The older STi's are just as fast. Have had the same engine since about '10. Good luck man !

I've seen a couple dyno graphs of '16 and '17 STI on Cobb Accessport which also included downpipes. They put down 296WHP/360TQ and 300WHP/330TQ. A bone stock M2 puts down ~330/360. Sure, the STI will be quicker off the line but the M2 is an overall faster car. M2 traps 113 mph, STI traps 105. A stage 1 tune won't make it gain 8 mph through the traps.

lol I mean at MSRP is fair enough given the profit margin for them isn't even much at all. With some dealerships charging over MSRP I feel MSRP is the best offer. You can't not be satisfied buying this at MSRP. I don't think anyone who bought an M2 feels they overpaid....or at least I hope no one has...

I have huge respect for Subarus and always will. I was able to attend the WRC in Argentina many years ago. We stood 20 feet from the peak of a big jump and could see three or four turns across a valley. Watching the speeds those things can achieve over terrain that would be treacherous at 30mph let alone 100+ was utterly incredible! Had my eye on picking up a 2005 STi back when they were new. At the time it wasn't feasible so I got the e39 and fell in love with BMW. Still have that itch to own an STi one day so I definitely understand where you are coming from. The newer styling doesn't do it for me so the M2 came at a good time!

IMO, Sti platform is just too old, way less efficient than N55. Not worth investment unless buy used. Can see you do have emotional attachment to it. Do it then but you'll be regretting not taking a m2 9/10.

The EJ is literally a 20 year old engine with serious reliability issues, partially due to the factory tune in view of modern emission standards.
Subaru should have upgraded it a long, long time ago. With things like the Golf R and RS out there, I'm not sure why anyone would buy an STI with that lump in it. That being said, I wouldn't bet against the STI in resale value. Both WRXs and STIs have CRAZY resale value. I would think it would be hard for the M2 to match it...as I don't think this car becomes the 1M...but we'll see.

No. The EJ257 fails at an incredibly alarming rate. Subaru acknowledges the rod bearing and piston issues with the motor. They stock shortblocks all over the country for a reason. No. While the turbo was changed, it's had the same engine since its introduction as a 2004. That post was all kinds of wrong.

I had a hawkeye WRX with the EJ, engine was not the fastest thing on the street but it was fun and with a turbo back exhaust it had a lot of character. If it was RWD I would have kept it. Between the two in the OP, I'd go M2.

That STI rear is so ugly...those taillights look so dated...
Check out the TT RS or wait for the M2 really... |

I'd rather go with a new base WRX and skip the STI. Not as fast obviously but the engine/turbo is a newer/better platform. Unless you can score a good deal on a used STI. For STI money I'd go focus RS..

OP your profile indicates you live in Florida. Why would you want AWD? Also STI and M2 are not even close when it comes to the engine and quality marks. I like the STI, but it's drastically different than the M2.
