I agree. It is over designed with lots of fake slots and grilles. I can't tell if it's trying to be a rally car, hatchback, crossover or what. I wouldn't pay $30k for it let alone $60k. You're telling me you'd pick that over an M2, used M4, Corvette Stingray or many others that would be way more awesome than a souped up civic? I think I'd still rather go Golf R or Focus RS vs waiting for vtec to kick in yo. In the end, it is their money, so peace be with them if that makes them happy.

I finally saw a few of these in person, one outside a health-food shop and the other at a car meetup. They look better in person. I had a chance to chat it up with the owner outside the health-food place. It was cool as we were comparing and talking about our cars.

I like the interior on the Type-R better than my RS. Having said that, I would still pick my RS over the Type-R and would certainly take an M2 over it. As a car enthusiast I do like it however.

Got mine last week. I love the car. Other than FWD the best way to describe is how people understand the E46 vs M2. This civic type R is like the Evo vs CTR. I don't know at the limits but at 80% it turns in like the evo with less scrubb and the turning radius sucks like the evo also.

My friend brought over the focus RS and I like the CTR more. Basically better seats, great shifter feel, less artificial, and way more interior room and better quality. This car just feels faster than the RS.

The most high performance fwd I've driven was the Fiesta ST. This type r takes the top spot now IMHO. The only thing going with the Fiesta ST was the turning radius, steering feel and raw feel. Other than that the CTR is better. Chassis feels more sorted and planted.

I was impressed with the M2 and now I'm impress with the CTR just as much. The CTR is a really good FWD car and based on feel off throttle I like the civic better but when powering I like the rwd feels better. Between the two cars if you're on a budget go with the CTR. If you can afford the M2 it's the nicer car with I drive and better quality dealer to work with. The problem is that the M2 is not $20k better especially the driving feel, performance, and driving excitement is close.

I can’t imagine that there are many people cross shopping the two.

Biggest advantage with the M2 is that it is OK to be seen in one if you are over 18 years old.

I suppose you're probably right for those shopping a primary car but I can see a local track/auto x or someone looking for a fun toy car in addition.

The Civic Type R, Golf R, STI, S3, Focus RS seems to be under 40k. The M2 is at a strange price point. At 50k the M2 competes against the CLA, Mustang/Cameros?

Although the looks aren't my cup of tea I'm glad to see Honda bringing these type of cars back to the US. I drove an AP2 S2000 for 3 years and still wish I would have never sold it. To me, this harkens back to the days of the CRX, S2K, NSX, and Integra Type R's of our youth. At the same time it introduces todays youth to what we were brought up on and ignites their love of cars. I guess in the same sense its much like BMW bringing out the M2 to remind all of us of the company roots of building "The Ultimate Driving Machine"

On todays roads filled with "appliance" cars something like this is a welcome sight to me

Good write up. The extra 20K isn't for the performance, it's for the fit and finish, grown up interior, and the fact that it's not a civic which are all non performance related. It looks way too boy racer for me, the RS was bad enough but this is over the top.

The M2 is definitely 20K better looking

Exactly. Agree on the boy racer.. pretty much across the entire civic line but this Type R is way too much " show " even if it has the " go" to back up all the looks. I've been a fan of nearly Honda Accord Hatch/ Civic Si/Integra Type R ... since the late 80s but can definitely say I made the right choice choosing a used E30 M3 over buying a new mid 90s Acura integra Type R.

Twenty years from now I would take the same bet. Give me a used M235i/M240 ( let alone an M2 ) vs this 2017 CIVIC TYPE R one hundred times out of one hundred chances.

The black color seems probably the best choice for this car, still very aggressive but less flashy. I like it!! If you will weight the car in the future, please share the result.

Overkill on looks but I give Honda credit for finally bringing the Type R to the states, just too late IMO. What they should of done is brought over the Type R hatch back in 99

As a Honda fan, the Type-Rs were always awesome because they generally looked like the base model - keeping with clean lines and the overall shape - but there was more emphasis on the performance tweaks.

The CTR has strayed from that formula. smh Honda.

The black hides the vents which is definitely a +1. I don't even like black but I do like it on this car since it gives it a more of a basic look. Other color look more overblown. I am surprise how many positive comment received with the CTR and unlike when I had the Fiesta ST everyone had something to say like where is the "remote control", clown car, wow why, do you like it?

Having just seen a bog standard Civic sedan today, I reckon they ACTUALLY haven't strayed too much from the original formula. The standard Civic is also really busy from a design perspective
