OP made the mistake acknowledging and communicating with him. Big mistake.
When I come across a road road incident I typical do not make eye contact and pretend I do not see them. If I am in a quick car I typically floor leave as fast as possible.

I like to put my hand up to my ear and cock my head to the side...then look at them and mouth the words "I can't hear you"...douche bags like this usually loose their shit...start screaming and getting red in the face...and if conditions are just right the other guy has an aneurysm right there on the spot. Problem solved.
Drive away. |

I think there are an awful lot of people who have big problems in their private life and anything at all can set them off in a rage. It's not necessarily YOU, you just happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. You are not necessarily the object of their rage even if they are yelling at you. They're probably thinking of their wife who's just filed for divorce, or their their boss who's just fired them, or that their Viagra no longer has the desired effect. It's best just to ignore them - they will no doubt feel like a dick as soon as they've cooled down. Of course, this doesn't apply to Audi drivers who are, quite simply, dicks.

Yeah I had a few. I was in the middle lane on a highway, there is a red Jetta on my left, a black SUV on my right; my exit is coming up, I need to merge in the right lane. I speed up with my signal to overtake SUV on right with ease, meanwhile punk in red Jetta on my left apparently wanted to overtake me and come into the middle lane at the same time as i wanted to speed up to get into the right. He had no right turn signal so I had no idea. He must have thought I was trying to not let him switch lanes, so when I made my switch to the right, he comes after, switches to middle from left, and proceeds to switch to right lane and cut me off in the worst way imaginable, his rear door is level with my headlight. I brake, switch to middle, pass a a few cars and go into right again to catch my exit, and he switches back to left and tries to cut me off again, I just close the gap and he goes and cuts someone off to make the exit. I was pretty pissed. Also to mention, roads in NYC are pretty messed up in some areas, so I would come to a stop as if I had a speed bump in places where the streets have multiple huge potholes and the road looks like it belongs in a 3rd world country - you have these drivers who think they drive tanks and honk and flash their lights at you. Im talking about potholes that if you go in at 10mph an hour, there's a high possibility you'l have a bent.

Sounds like you escalated that needlessly and were potentially in the wrong to begin with.

Agree, after nearly 40 years of driving in a variety of countries. Sometimes however, they want to play. A while back I was cruising at 116km/h on a near-deserted freeway in NSW. This is a speed generally tolerated by Police even though the limit is 110km/h. I came up to an Hyundai driven by a provisional (P-plate) driver - a girl with a boy in the front seat. Their licence restricts them to 100km/h and they were travelling below that judging by our closing speed. I passed, cruise on, with plenty of space, although it was apparent she had started to speed up as I had come alongside. Once I'd pulled in front (and no, I certainly didn't cut her off), she continued to accelerate, got very close indeed. I squeezed the throttle to ease the gap (in case she didn't have a good sense of speed and thought I was slowing), then she pulled out to pass. As she drew alongside, I let the throttle off, and hence the car settled back into the 116km/h cruise. She pulled in front, braked, and slowed. I kept a very safe gap, gave her 20 secs to see what she was doing, and as she was now travelling at 95km/h, passed her again. This time, I sped up to about 130km/h, held that, got several hundred metres ahead, pulled in, then let the car slow to 116km/h. Moments later, she is right up behind me again. I then let her pass, backed off to 100km/h and stayed there. Naturally, a couple of minutes later I was right back with her. Now she was only doing about 85-90km/h and watching me in her mirror. I pottered along several car lengths back for several minutes, but she was still driving erratically between 80 and 100km/h. So I planted it, reached a speed that her Hyundai would be incapable of matching and sat there for probably 2 minutes, then resumed a 120km/h cruise, thinking that while I'd hopefully broken the psychological elastic bond, subsequently taying at a speed that would lose her her licence would be safe enough. But no - several minutes later she came past at about 140km/h, pulled sharply in front of me and braked, slowing to 80km/h again. As there was no traffic I just say there behind her, several car lengths back for some time further. I was going to pull off at the next rest area, but along came another car, cruised past her at 110km/h. You can guess what happened next..... anyway I watched this cat and mouse with the other car for a bit until a rest stop came up.
I really couldn't work out what she was up to, wondering if I'd maybe cut her off in a town a couple of hours earlier, but when she took off after the other motorist, I realised she was just playing the game.

Speaking of Audi drivers I've actually never ran into an Audi driver who were dicks. Ironically the cars that drive by me fast are Hyundais and I just chuckle and ignore them. |

I could write book of all the nonsense drivers on the Toronto roads. Especially those who think changing lanes in traffic in front of 18 wheelers to get ahead 2 cars in traffic is a good idea.

Honestly, and I don't mean this as a criticism of you per se, just more the situation, but your actions fed into that and in my opinion, were unwise.
Just let the road ragers go. Back down, defuse. Turn away, slow down, don't look, don't talk, let him be. It's not worth it. There are a lot of crazy people out there, you never know who may take that extra step. Some people are armed. Some people are willing to damage their own property to hurt you. It's just not worth it. A young father was just killed in Honolulu from a road rage incident. As a (presumably) young guy, you feel the need to stand up for yourself. That's fine, just do it for something that's actually important and meaningful. |
