I don't mind a good DCT but the advantages it brings come at the cost of reduced driver involvement, so it's not all good news. For me, cars like this are about fun and being involved in the driving rather than lap times or being the fastest. It's a street car after all.

Given all that and also the high costs (3.900€ here, which is ~$4.500), it's an easy decision for me to go for the manual.

YMMV.

It depends if you're buying it primarily for the street or track usage.

Stats so far (175 votes):
  • 110 out of 175 = 62.86%: manual transmission;
  • 65 out of 175 = 37.14%: M-DCT Drivelogic.
I suspect that most voters are not getting EURO spec, because in Europe M-DCT may get the majority.

Speaking for myself: 6MT.

It's simple, if you want to be fast, go with the DCT. If you want to think you are fast, go with the manual.

I grew up on manuals, but believe most DCTs are much better for performance driving. If they weren't, most race cars would be manual, not semi-automatics.

I think a vote option of 4 options might reveals lot:-

1 DD and manual
2 Play car and manual
3 DD and DCT
4 Play car and DCT

I'd be #1.

Lots will be #2

Racers #4 maybe

And do it alone 1 car possibly #3 which was my M4.

Say what you want about the emotional experience, but the days when a manual transmission produced better performance numbers than an automatic alternative are over.

This.

I'd be number 3.

My current daily is an 00 Boxster with a 5spd. Also have an e30 that I'm building up into a track car. I'll be trading in the Boxster but if I ever have the urge to row my own gears I'll pull out the e30.

Also... The fiancé said I should go DCT so she will feel comfortable driving the car if she wants. Love got me on that one... :

This will be my secondary vehicle so I am going with a 6 speed manual and that's one major reason I am buying the M2 because manual transmission is offered.

Say what you want about the couple tenths of a second you'll shave off to 60, but the days when an automatic transmission produce a better emotional and engaging experience have yet to happen.

Manual, for fun. Plus, I like the mechanical connection in a world of electronic everything.

Anyone here comment on the throw with the manual tranny in say, the M4?

I this video, it looks like a damn long throw! I'm keen on a short, tight throw. This video makes it the throw look huge!

Do you mean heel/toe shifting?

You don't need to "double clutch" with modern MT's like you use to in the older MT's or some trucks... https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double_clutch_(technique)

I think the wide angle of the video is exaggerating the throw. Take a look at this video at the 9:05 mark comparing the M4 DCT and 6MT--the throws look better to me, but still a bit long.

I'm torn on the choice for the M2. I love the DCT in my M4, but the 6MT feels like the proper choice for an M2 that is going to be a driver engagement car.

Devil's advocate...

Double clutching saves synchro wear...

Heel toe is used by most on the street just to save clutch wear (on the track, it is used so as not to upset the car mid corner or under threshold braking)...

Anyway, just making the point that both techniques are employed, on the street, to reduce component wear...so one isn't necessarily archaic while the other acceptable.

Manual transmission auto blip?

Does anyone know if the manual version will have auto blip when downshifting like on the M4?

Yes it will in when you select Normal and Sport Mode. It won't in sport plus.

Possibly but I'll play Devil's advocate back With modern transmissions, doing this would have no meaningful impact on "practical" clutch life unless you planned to keep the car a long, long, LONG time with lots and lots and LOTS of mileage. A non-abused MT in a BMW today will easily last the normal life of the car unless there is a premature failure even without double clutching. I know of no one... experienced MT drivers, driving instructors or racers... that double clutch a modern MT... not because what you said isn't probably correct but because it doesn't practically matter and makes shifting slower and more cumbersome.
