It seems that you must shift pretty well! Because absolutely there are people that don't shift properly, Yes instructors comment to students on it ... and yes it typically involves the timing of when they depress the clutch. I'm not talking about grinding gears here... a little higher level than that ... |

I very nearly bought a DCT M2 instead of a 6MT. Very glad I didn't.
The 6MT is soooooo sublime on the M2. You can granny shift as much as you want and you barely have to put in any effort, or if you want to do it all yourself with no nannies you can do that too! Only thing I hate is the short 6th gear. I love it. |

So I'm 300 miles in with DCT now. I think it's just me but...the F87 DCT seems to move between D and R a shade quicker. Actually it's summer right...even in the uk I recall on the M4 the DCT was slow mainly when cold starting in winter? Experienced M2 winter owners, is this the same pretty much?
Cheers. Loving the car, shame I held off for so long but hey ho. In it now!!!!

Forgive the stooopid question, but how to turn off the gear change 'suggestion'? It drives me nuts, and reminds me of a dog poop brown Rabbit I drove for a short time about 40 years ago. Plus the damned thing thinks I should be in 6th going about 35 mph uphill.

I'm no stranger to manuals (NX2000, STI, Miata's, etc) all cars I had in manual and they are indeed all fun. But the smart replacement for it is BMW's DCT, not VW's DSG or Porsche's PDK. Only BMW's DCT can replace the manual. Where the proper movement is to pull to upshift and push to downshift and when you feel the quick upshifts with purposeful acceleration and continues the enjoyment slowing down from 4th to 3rd and 2nd even at 1st, popping and burping at 10 mph traffic while my wife keep hitting me on the shoulder embarrassed from other drivers staring at us, that is still a fun way to drive. Is the manual funner when you are sitting in traffic which is half the time in SoCal? I'm not entirely sure?

I've been an instructor for 10+ years and I have NEVER had to comment anyones shifting in any way. But maybe it comes down again to how different we approach manuals in Europe vs US. |

Manual gear boxes should be mandatory for anyone that have mistakenly stepped on the gas pedal instead of the brake. Especially those that have driven through a crowd of people or ended up in the lobby of the local fast food establishment. The reasoning is a MT requires more thinking and coordination with feet/hands, clutch/throttle/, gear lever position thus preventing tragic accidents.
That being said, I chose the DCT simply because I shift a motorcycle 10 hours a day and like the gear change speed of the DCT. The DCT feels like a bike, less movement of hands from gear lever to steering wheel. |

My honest opinion
If the M2 is your weekend car or your commute involves no traffic, MT is the only option you should consider If however you DD it and also get stuck in traffic a lot... DCT all the way. |

It's been about 8 years since I last had a manual. I've had my manual M2 for just over 2 weeks now. I drive in Toronto traffic every day and it can get pretty bad. Never once has having a manual made it worse. I don't even think about it. It's a total breeze. So glad I chose it over the DCT. I had the DCT on my 335is. Amazing gearbox but it's no comparison to the manual. My opinion of course.

My first non-manual
I've always preferred MT, but I got DCT with my new M2 after a ton of hard thinking, and opinions of car guys (including Bill Auberlin), who all said go DCT.
I am happy with the DCT now and do not regret the choice - but I shift it in sequential, so I still do the shifting, just without the clutch pedal. I hate it in automatic (D), but in sequential (S), I am loving it. Have not tracked it yet (still inm break-in mode), so I don't know what I'll do when on the track, but look forward to figuring it out! |

I chose DCT because... I used to drive in France with the stick on my right. Then for work reason i moved to Ireland where the stick is on my left, an I kept banging my right hand on the door when I needed to shift. That reason and also to a lesser extent, the fuel economy, tax economy and the city traffic as this is my daily driver. Love the DCT smoothness in comfort and brutality in sport +. But I get the manual must be really fun too.
