Invisible Limp Mode..

a few days ago i ran over a plastic bag on the highway... there were too many cars around to risk braking or swerving, i did the rear view mirror check hoping the bag would fly right out but it didnt, i then had a burning smell for a few days, i figured out that some of the bag had melted to the mid pipe so i scrapped off the residue with a putty knife and the smell is now gone, but now for the past few days i noticed the car is running sluggish, at first i just thought it was the weather conditions or even bad gas but now im well into another tank of 94 octane from a different gas station and it still feels heavy, basically i can describe it as the car feels very heavy in comfort mode and in sport + mode it feels almost like it did originally in comfort mode? is there any sensors the bag could have messed up to cause this? is it possible some of the bag is trapped somewhere? my gut says the car is running rich, there are no lights/warnings, temperature is in middle, oil is 100% etc etc opinions? bone stock car with 15K km

It is likely all in your head. Though check the flap control system on the muffler.

Does the car sound any different... eg rougher exhaust tone?

Would be good to get a quick scan done for codes... use a scanner that can read BMW level codes or install BMW Rheingold on a laptop.

Garage List
Check your air filter. It would have been caught there if it was sucked up.

The only sensors I'm aware of on the exhaust are the pre-cat and post-cat lambda probes. It doesn't however sound like the bag was anywhere near them. Just take it to the dealer and ask them to inspect your exhaust and check for error codes etc.

Maybe there was glue in the bag and it got on your wheels and now the wheels are sticking to the pavement. That's my guess, sticky glue wheels.

Most likely the last one...but still worth looking around. Maybe you'll learn something in the process.

But I agree, some skipped lines and tabs go a long way to make a post easier to read.

But you said that the Sport Plus mode feels like Comfort mode, so you have lost some performance by you butt dyno? I think it would be odd for something on the outside to effect things like that. It is unlikely that any part of the bag got above the under pan and just a piece burnt off on the exhaust. When in doubt go the dealer to have your under warrantee car checked out!

Those are the worse.

I've had them, like, 3 times.

All you can do is sprinkle talcum powder on your tires and drive around till the stickiness wears off. -scr

a plastic bag cannot cause performance issues unless by some miracle it is sitting on top of the air filter in the intake box.

When you were scraping with the putty knife are you sure you did not hit a connector or wire or plug of any type?

I run over shit all the time in my M2. I even hit dirt roads hard when trucks are driving like their f150 is gonna fall apart. The shooting range I go to has a pretty sick dirt road. These cars are solid. Just run more stuff over to knock loose anything you might have stuck from previously running things over.

When I was growing up my dad drove over a plastic bag and it got stuck and somehow ruined the transmission

I always try to avoid driving over bags because of that.
