Tires

Hey guys,

Does anyone know if BMW are shipping with the new Pilot Sports, or are they still with the Continental's that replaced then PSS4's?

I'm scheduled for delivery next week, and want to see if I need to order new wheels!

Tire selection seems random. I asked my dealer several weeks ago which tires would be used and he said he didn't know. I've just had my fingers crossed the whole time. It will be interesting to see between the two of us what we get.

I had an April build and got the Contis, but to be honest I don't really care.

Tires are the most temporary part of a car - after I do a couple track sessions on street tires I'll be replacing them anyway (I do not have the luxury of having dedicated track wheels).

By the end of the summer the Contis will be but a distant memory.

Furthermore, even on Contis, the M2 is a blast to drive and the limits will still be well above what you would want to approach on the street.

Contis are more than capable for street driving. Having said that, I'm driving with DSC OFF in an attempt to burn through them so they can be replaced with 275 or possibly 285 PS4s.

PS4s are getting outstanding reviews.

Everything I've seen and read say they're an improvement over the MPSS, but not drastically. Just a bit better in certain areas, but overall you wouldn't notice unless you really push them hard. What I can't find anywhere is how the ride quality compares between the two.

Hey, any improvement over the so-called "best overall" street tire, no matter how small, is gravy the way I see it. You're bright though. The difference shouldn't be noticed on the street.

I have no "knowledge" of what BMW's plans are - however I have experience watching what car MFGs have done over the years.

And my experiences would say that you won't be seeing BMW put PS4s on the M2 anytime in the near future.

Happy to be wrong, just doubt it will happen.

I wonder if for ED they never use Conti's. Don't want to piss people off when they are standing next to you and all....

They did the very opposite of pissing me off haha.. I had this crazy idea to propose to my significant other at the same time as I was picking up my M2 and BMW was onboard from the start and they helped out a lot. I'll make sure to do a little writeup once the car is in Canada, but I can definitely say that I like the Brand even more now. Great cars, Great people!

Everything I've read says they're noticeably better in every way, unless you push them hard. When pushed hard you lose some of the feedback on the limits the PSS gave, in exchange for more compliance and quiet during the remaining 99.5% of the time you use them.

So.

When ordering be sure to specify Pilot Sport 4S
http://m.michelin.com.au/AU/en/tires...sport-4-s.html

And not Pilot Sport 4s

There is also a Pilot Sport 4 - which isn't the same thing.

Through luck or lacktherof I got Contis on my car (Sep 16 build) and was pretty disappointed with not only the performance but looks of the tires. At 10,000 miles I decided to go with the new 4s and wow, huge difference when pushed to the limits on mountain roads, road noise and wet performance.

Another member actually fit 295 on the stock rear wheels. The problem you get with wider tires is potential rubbing, especially when using spacers. The rotating mass should be the same because of the profile gets shorter as the tire gets wider.

If you search you'll find some people that went one size up front/rear to M3/4 tire sizes with everything else stock had some rubbing in the rear during hard cornering. Finding the proper tire/wheel sizes for a wide stance depends on multiple factors, such as ride height, wheel size/width, brake clearance, wheel well clearance, tire size/aspect ratio, wheel offset, etc. You need to fully comprehend all of these factors if you want to do it right and not have any rubbing.

Modding ain't easy...
