Brake Pads Recommendation for TRACK use
Hi,
I am planning on going to the the track with my car next year and I am looking for your recommendation on what pads to use. I will swap pads only for the track (is it overkill?)

I've had a good experience with PFC 08s. They have good bite but excellent modulation.
Additionally, they are designed as an endurance pad and will last a long time. I have ten days on mine and probably have about half life on them. |

If you have no or very little experience then stock might be fine depending on the track. I'm an intermediate driver at a Canadian Tire Motorsport Park/Mosport I am using Pagid RS29s but I might be able to get away with stock, just. Only a couple corners need hard braking. I had also used stock pads at the Nurburgring while on ED but I was not pushing the car hard at all.
I think the RS29 are probably the most popular for the M2, lots of people are using them. I've seen a few others on here using PFC, Endless and a few Hawks. I bought my RS29s from a fairly local shop but had them shipped to me, it was expensive but I think shipping from the US with customs clearance would have been pretty close in price. I've done 2 weekends on the pads so far with tons of pad left. I swap between the stock pads for street and the RS29s for the track, they squeal and rattle way too much for me to leave them in. |

My experience with the OEM pads is they overheat and drop uneven pad deposits on the disk causing shuddering. This only gets worse overtime and eventually a new disk is needed.
Changed over to endless pads and don't have the problem of shuddering after a track day now. |

I've used Pagid RSL 1 and RS29 previously. Switched to PFC 08. I really like the bite/characteristics of the PFC 08. Also, they do a much better job at managing rotor deposits and scraping-off bedded brake material when cold, so if you're swapping between street/race pads between track days, the PFC 08, in my opinion, has been MUCH better. Get the Pagid RS29s. Do NOT use the stock pads on track. They will "melt" and leave uneven deposits on the rotors which will result in a horrible brake shudder. Ask me how I know!

Another option is to run a rotor friendly track pad.
I got sick of swapping out pads at the track especially when I had a couple students to worry about as well. I've had outstanding results running these 3 pads both on the street and at HPDE's. Raybestos ST43's Carbotech 10's, or 12's Porterfield R4's. All three are acceptable pads for street use even in freezing temps. All three will not eat rotors when cold (most track ready pads will destroy rotors until they heat up) All three have excellent initial bite, have 1200+ degree heat tolerance, zero fade. All three will dust a ton and squeal as you stop unless they're hot. Right now my go to pad is the Carbotech 12's. Their was a split within the company and a additional brand G-Loc offers similar options. HTH, HAZMAT 2004 Mazda Rev It Up Finalist 2002-Present HPDE Instructor |

I use Hawk DTC60 on the M2 and also used them on my old M3. Have always had good luck with them. The only issue is that that brake dust in the rain is tough to remove, but that is a small price to pay, IMO. Good pad and a good value. Swapping pads is extremely easy on this car too, especially if you disconnect the brake pad sensors and permanently zip tie them out of the way.
As others have said, if this is your first time on the track. Just take your car there stock and enjoy. No need for track pads yet. Good luck! |

Hi Benzima,
If you are planning to go with BMWCQ next summer to Tremblant you must change your brake oil in April. They will not accept brake oil older then 6 months for a good reason. Also regarding the pads, last summer a student in the intermediate group ran with stock pads at tremblant and ended up with uneven pad deposits causing lots of vibration upon braking during the afternoon. I saw him at the following event and he had bought track pads. My suggestion would be to: 1) buy pagid RS29 online during boxing week (they usually have good promotions) 2) change your brake oil in April once the car is out of storage Hope this helps and see you on the track next spring |

Started shopping for RS29s and wow they are pricey. Did anyone get any coupon action from Autosport?
I know the old Porsche saying: “which part did you think was gonna be cheap the Porsche or the racing part.” Guess the same is true for BMW too. |

Pagid RS29 Pads
Just installed my Pagid RS29 pads and have a loud clunking noise in front set. OEM pads had ears on the fronts. The Pagids don't. Is this normal?

Yes, it's normal, the RS29s don't come with anti-rattle plates so they are loud when changing direction and they'll also rattle a bit over bumps. I love them for the track but I could never live with them on the street, they're too noisy.
