Suspension bottoming out?!

So I recently had tckline racing coilovers indtalled and I have noticed my car is bottoming out once in a while. Aside from ride height or stiffer springs, would adding preload help at all?

What ride height do you currently have it set at, and when you say 'bottoming out': do you mean the car is hitting the ground, or just hitting the bumpstops?

It seems the tires are rubbing on the top of the wheel well. How do I determine the ride height setting, do I measure from a certain point? I’m planning on getting the car aligned and corner balanced hopefully soon.

Measure from the underside of the top of the wheel arch to the lowest point on the wheel rim.

For reference, BMW M Performance suspension for the M2 has a recommended ride height measurement of 595mm front and 600mm rear, but other brands can go lower.

Sounds like you are 'rubbing', and not 'bottoming out', which would be another issue. I would raise your ride height a bit if you are rubbing. On my initial install, I was sitting too low and my rear and fronts would rub under moderate dips on a highway. After letting the height settle after two week of driving, I went back to get the height raised slightly to the point where now it only rubs once in a blue moon, under very big dips if I am going too fast, but also the car sits low enough with little to no wheel gap.

Correct, I don’t know if it’s actually bottoming out, but the tire is rubbing under strong dips. I believe it’s mainly just the rear. I can’t find any rubbing marks on the front wheel wells.

For the front, my option for adjusting height is by the preload on the spring only?

What adjustments do TC Kline's have? Most coilovers - yes, just the preload. But some will also allow you to move the damper body relative to the lower mounting.

The TcKline height adjustment is done via preload collar only. What I’m confused about is that I see other people with aftermarket suspension and they look to be sitting as low as me and they report no rubbing.

Yes, adding more spring preload means more compression travel. Where are you in terms of ride height right now?

This is kinda anecdotal, but many years ago when I installed Koni Yellow shocks on my GTI with a set of Neuspeed springs, I would bottom out (hit the bump stops) on certain high speed dips. Solved it with a taller Neuspeed Sofsport spring that apparently was the same rate as the slightly lower ones before. As other have said, ride height is the cheap way to test and possibly solve your problem; the next step would be higher spring rates.

I know TCKline's philosophy is to use the softest spring that works well on track and is comfy on the street. What rates did you go with?

Had this same problem with the TCK setup. Raised it to just above the 595/600 BMW recommendation and the problem went away.
