Track tire size question
I'm thinking about getting the Apex 18x9.5 ET28 FL5 wheels, and according to some other threads I searched, it looks like you can go with either:
275/35 18" or 265/35 18" For the RE71R tires, according to TireRack the 275s are about $20 cheaper per tire. So I could save $100 and maybe get more rubber against the ground... Any reasons I should do 265 instead of 275 with that setup? Planning camber plates as well. Thx!

Some guys will say 275, but 265 is a better fit on 9.5, giving you better turn in. And, 275 on a 9.5 rolls over more, so no advantage. I’d go 265 on a 9.5.

The 275 on the 9.5" wheel will create a situation where the tire rolls over onto the sidewall under high load cornering. This is not an issue on the 265 tire, as the wheel supports more of the sidewall and this "roll over" disappears completely. The 265 will be the absolute best choice for the 9.5" width wheel. - Max

I am really liking the FL-5s, and thought we might be able to add a bit more good info to this post. How about 18 x 10.5 with 295/30s over 18 x 10 w 285/35s on the rear? Any issues, etc.? Any feedback running R7s on them? Trying to figure out just how much more all-around benefit there would be over an 18 x 10 with 285s. Thanks! |

Thank you for the question and for the kind words regarding the FL-5! We do recommend avoiding running a 285/35 tire on the 18x10" wheel due to the same issues noted above. The 285 does not have the sufficient sidewall support on the 10" width, which results in the sidewall rolling over in high load situations. We would recommend a 275/35 on a 10" width. The 18x10.5" is perfect in accommodating this 285/35-18 size tire. We do have a few customers utilizing a 295/35-18 without issue. The 295/30 is a bit too short of a tire so we recommend sticking with the 295/35 if you have your heart set on the 295 width. We unfortunately do not have any customers running the Hoosier R7 on the M2 just yet. Tyspeed Automotive is working on a pretty wicked M2 track build with BFG R1's but I do not believe they have started testing just yet. I hope this was helpful! - Max
