I'm still in California and I love it out here. But the roads in Idaho and up into western Montana are absolutely nuts and are rarely crowded. I used to spend a lot of time in those parts and I'm currently jonzing to take a proper car up that way for a few weeks.

Fantastic drives with beautiful scenery, enjoy it!

pyrat is the codename of the project for the 1M. Whether or not BMW designers have an affinity for the Rum.... is a good question

It's a BMW thing, very few people will get it, outside of this forum. When BMW was designing the 1M, their internal name for it was "Pyrat" which I assumed was a play on the word "Pirate."

The owner of "Pyrat 2" is implying that the M2 is a sequel to the 1M. Hence the name. But "Pyrat" is also a liquor brand. Same word, way different meanings.

Ok, make sense.. I didn't know that. I knew the 1M was this big secret, tight-knit project, so a code name was fitting. The M2 was pretty much planned production, I didn't think they had a reason for an internal name.. Any idea on what the M2 Competition's internal name is?

I haven’t heard anything about a code name for the M2 Competition.

Artemis might know.

Not heard an internal code name for the M2 Competition buzzing or hushed. Maybe simply "CS" ?

Down at BMW M the folks like liquors. I recall SCOTT26 posting a Kraken liquor picture (July 2017). But likely that was just tongue-in-cheek.

"BMW M GmbH chief Kay Segler says the internal code name for the M3 GTS was «Jägermeister», a reference to the famous German digestif and frat fuel with a history of sponsoring motorsports" (sources: here, here and here)
  • the internal code name for the E82 1M was "Pyrat";
"Before the 1 Series M Coupe was given its official designation, BMW M referred to the model internally as «Pyrat», allegedly because of the engineers' affection for a spiced rum of the same name" - "Above all else it's a car that allows the M Division to fly the pirate flag once again within BMW and in some ways the automotive world. And it all sort of makes sense considering the code name for the 1M is «Pyrat». A name inspired by late nights creating the car followed up by later nights drinking Pyrat Rum" (source: here, here and here)
  • the internal code name for the F87 M2 was "Pyrat2" (though, as we know, the launch color is cocktail blue (Long Beach Blue), as in the tropical Blue Lagoon cocktail featuring the Blue Curaçao liquor)
"The code nickname for the M2 is «pyrat2». Why pyrat2? If you recall, the 1M coupe's nickname was «pyrat»" (source: here)

It's actually very common, across all industries, to have code names for projects before the product is launched.

Actually that will likely be far more appropriate in April 2019 ... not 2018...

Yes, I'm a lucky bastard for sure. No wife or kids, so I have to spend my $ somewhere...

If I had to choose one car it would definitely be the M4!!! The M2 is a LOT of fun, but the M4 is in a totally different level. I just wish that it would be a little smaller in size. Love the size of the M2. I really want to see how the M2 will behave with the S55 engine in it.

I've been using JIMS on my cars since 1994. We've had Infiniti QX's for nearly a decade and the tag has been OURQX. My wife's cars have had WEESH on them for years as it's a nickname for Alicia.... Sorry none of those are are BMW or performance related but they are personalized.

That's nice! Only those in the know would know what it means, which makes it a kind of inside joke.

I work in the TV industry, and have spent a lot of time working on the colour science and engineering of HDR colour volume mapping for a pretty big CE company. I really wanted ST 2084, but apparently in California, you're not allowed to have two letters followed by two numbers!

I ended up going with:

I see you're in SF. I was just there earlier this week for a conference. Drive safe.

On a previous car, I used:
AYBABTU

Only certain people who remember the late 90s and internet memes will get that one...

I had "EPIC FAI" on a previous car as well. Best was when I got a picture of that car being towed, especially since it was for a failure that I told the dealer was coming about 3 days before it actually failed. (Accessory belt tensioner pulley)
