Might just be the type of person who gets on the wait list that early or pays over sticker is the type of person who gets in and out of a new car every year or two. Maybe they just wanted out while the car still has low miles and before the Competition is announced/released.

Damn! You guys have "occasional wives" in Canada?!?

I like how you guys do things!

For what it's worth (probably not much), I just searched So. Calif., and found numerous dealerships with NO M2's, but one (Irvine BMW) had 4 of them, one white, two black, one LLB and they were asking over $70k for all of them but one, and that one was $69,775.

Another dealership was asking MSRP, and had only one, but there aren't very many around, in Southern California, based on my searching different dealership websites....

In any case, as others have stated, I have one on order and plan to enjoy and drive the hell out of it! I certainly expect it to decline in value over time.

I wonder why the Irvine cars are priced so high? I bought from there Jan 2017 and they listed for 5k over I think but I was thinking MSRP to make a deal. Now the mark up is even higher? I wonder if they just feel if the local cars have dried up they ask for more or what they are thinking?

Yep for me Irvine wanted $5k over - had an allocation there but said no thanks once I got one for MSRP @ Long Beach...

Shame on you Irvine!

Another note about them is they list ALL the M2s as MT because they think it gets more interest. Read the options list and you will see some of them are DCT.

To everyone getting totally bent out of shape about possible depreciation (or those "non-concerned"), the OP brings a valid point. No need to get over-defensive. More power to those that "don't care" if their car goes to $0 after 3-5yrs, but stating so is either stubbornness or dead money. My 2cents.

I kind of figured as much, just like to discuss it. It's been two years and I'm finally on the verge of purchasing one so I'm overexcited and have some fanboy feelings going on about the car.

I think if you research many sources you will find people generally REALLY like the car, and there isn't really anything else that is clearly better in its class if you want a car that checks these boxes. Maybe you could find something you would like better for the same price used though, I don't know, it depends on what you want.

Out west with low mileage you can sell close to what you paid. Kind of crazy, but I never see them, I see M3/M4 all the time have only seen one M2 just driving around. Rarely see one sit on a lot.

It is a great car for the $$$ - drive and enjoy - it is going to depreciate as all cars do.

I actually think the F80 is a better overall package/car than my F87, but the size of the F87 makes me want to drive it all the time.

I am excited about the G80, but shocking to me how much size can affect my connection to a car.

Prices don't seem to be taking a hit in Canada, about 65 available and only 7 below MSRP with high mileage. Some are in the $80's & $90's. Only 26 in Ontario, the cheapest new one is $68,915.

I can start with some data and then throw in some speculation.

On 11-27-17 there were 92 new and 63 used for a total of 155 M2's on Autotrader. Today there are 198 new and 96 used for a total of 294. And not all dealers list on Autotrader.

Some new cars listed on Autotrader get posted by dealers but have been pre sold. I speculate this percentage has declined over time.

As others have stated, in the end supply and demand will drive pricing. Supply is now available, and demand is likely declining as pent up demand has been satisfied and the anticipation of the M2 Competition likely has some postponing their purchase. Unless demand exceeds supply, I personally would expect recent low mileage used cars to sell at 15-20% below new. It is easy to find 2016 and 2017 M4's at 20-25% off new pricing. I am amazed at continuing to see used M2's listed at or near new car prices.

So back to the title of this thread, it seems to me that M2 prices will take a hit.

Having no skin in the game, I find the topic interesting and amusing.

I wonder if people thought the M2 would mirror what we've seen with the 1M in this regard - very very little depreciation, or actual appreciation in some instances.

However, it's obvious to me that we won't see any the same sort of reaction because of a few specific factors. 1) the 1M was an experiment to see if people really DID want an E46-sized M car instead of an E92-sized M car (resounding yes), and 2) the 1M had a very short production run and was numerically limited to ~1400 car worldwide or whatever it ended up being (I know they made some extras at the end).

The M2 is much more "mass-produced" in the sense that there's not a numerically limited amount of cars. BMW does artificially limit the numbers produced (to keep demand high and to avoid M2s sitting on lots), but that's not the same thing as having a truly limited car.

Therefore, the civic M2 will absolutely depreciate, especially those that are pre-LCI. They might do it at a slower rate than the average car or BMW, but it's already happening.

I've never worried about a car depreciating...which is the main reason this topic is amusing to me...

I've never cared about depreciation when it's something I will keep for awhile. I was really into BMW and on forums a lot when I had my 95 M3. After several years, I lost track of what went on with BMW's, and missed out on the 1M.

This is a bullshit post. I just ran an employee lease on a totally base AW M2 with no options, MT, all discounts and 10K miles per year. In other words, the cheapest of the cheap and the payments are well into the $700's USD.

$600 Canadian is roughly $488 USD. No f_cking way.

BMW Made ~6,300 1Ms worldwide. Clearly that number wasn't enough. The M2 stayed within those numbers worldwide throughout the same production timeframe (15 months). Obviously the M2 is continuing to be produced so that number is now double the 1M and will continue to increase. For reference, BMW made some 18,000 E30 M3s.

Sorry, good point - I was thinking of the US numbers.

Regardless, the overall number of M2s will vastly outnumber that figure.

EDIT - this thread has some good numbers on the overall pace of M2s, which (as you said) is already more than double the 1M:

Everything is bigger in Texas, right? Even payments?

Very different markets. No point to convert CAD to USD.

Not sure which dealership your friend works for, but IIRC one of the lower mainland dealerships leases out to their employees for 1% MSRP per month, in which case $965 would seem high.
