Best engine oil?

Just curious what brand oil and grades everyone is running. I know there isn't a right answer and a variety of different grades can be run depending on climate and type of driving... as far as brand goes, is anyone using anything other than BMW oil? I'm thinking of using Redline after the break in service as many reputable BMW websites recommend it and it has one of the lowest NOACK scores I've seen. (Too bad I can't find a score for BMW oil)

Motul 300V Power 5W40 Racing Motor Oil. Not too bad on Amazon. Started using this after my break in and so far so good. Spent several hours on track and still holding up great. Had it tested to make sure.

After break-in period (1200 miles), I used standard bmw oil for 4k miles, and it already asked me to top-up the oil as it was missing.

Then I switched to 300v 0w40 just to have an extra lube due to cold weather here, and engine is running flawlessly to know in the wood so far. Less vibration on idle compared to bmw crap-oil.

Didn't have to top up not even once in the past 18k miles, and I'm changing it around 6k miles.

Exhaust tips are always clean and I can literally lick them...

Is this 300v an LL-01 or LL-04? Reason I ask is that here in North America, I believe LL-01 is recommended because of the sulfur content in our fuel... I may be wrong

LL-01 or LL-04 is just a BMW standard for "approved" oils and which Oil manufactures have to pay the extra license to be certified by BMW.

300v is on the whole different level when it comes to quality and this is Ester core technology, and if it would be LL-01 or 04 approved it would cost at least twice how much it costs now.

Also, dealer won't approve this work and they wont put this oil if you request it to do it.

But if you intend to keep your M over 5+ years and drive it hard and on track, then you can't go wrong with 300v

I used to overpay with Amsoil and Redline for my '04 WRX. High quality oil no doubt but I would just use whatever BMW recommends. Any quality synthetic will suffice.

If I were to switch the oil myself to one of those would the dealership ever be able to find out?

I'm leaning towards redline 5w40 which is LL01 approved. Would you guys recommend this?

My opinion is that since BMW uses their standard oil in the cars that get beat like hell at the BMW Performance Driving School there isn't likely much to gain from using anything else. I have done the two day and advanced M schools in Palm Springs and those cars are driven very hard all day in the heat and they do nothing special in terms of fluids or any parts for that matter. I drove my E90 225,000 miles before I sold it using the BMW branded oil using their intervals and the car is still going strong with its new owner.

225k miles I'm an E90? Is that possible? What repairs did you do over your ownership time?

Just changed mine with the standard BMW oil, after 4K the oil really doesn’t look that bad. But I’ve heard of too many n55’s with regular 10k oil changes developing rod knock at 100k. The important part is you’re changing your oil on the regular (I do 5k but I think 7.5k is probably when the oil starts loosing its protection qualities).

300V Motul would be my go to for track work with shortened change intervals given the detergent/additive pack there.

8100 5W-40 is what I run day to day. As its LL01 certified.
