If you knew how much an M2 cost in Singapore you might not be surprised.

Man, that sounds really bad! I have had rocks stuck in my brake shield on my M3, this does not sound like that. Plus, that was a more continuous sound, at least until I went fast enough, or the rocks fell out.

That's not the rock between the rotor and guard noise at all.

Is there any resistance in the chassis when this happens ? Someone mentioned the car lifting up at the rear ?

Omg if my car had this I think I would make the dealer service rep ride in the car and listen until they scream MAKE IT STOP! and throw the keys to a loaner while they call BMW about a new DIFF.. yikes.
That's the same noise I have!

Is this problem happening to predominantly one type of transmission over the other? Manual vs DCT?

Has anyone approached a BMW dealer with this sound and received a correct answer/fix?

The answer is rocks caught against the brake shield. Clear the rocks, problem solved.

God, I can't believe this continues to get beaten to death on these forums.

If it was just rocks on the shield I don't think it would keep coming up over and over again.

Plus check out the videos and description from some forum members, there's a distinct difference between the two.

1) Why is Akkando able to create, then recreate, this sound multiple times in the same drive in the same garage? Wouldn't the rock fall out and be gone?

2) Why is the sound so similar every time? Aside from duration and intensity, it sounds the same. Would there not be a scenario where 2 rocks are stuck at once, or 5 rocks, or a rock on both the left side and the right side simultaneously? Nope, it's always just one rock on one side for one moment.

3) Why have several forum members, myself included, had this noise accompanied by the rear right corner of the car lifting on otherwise flat pavement?

4) Why do rocks never fall out below 20 MPH?

5) Why did bending my dust shields back not fix this?

I got the same sound as Akkando, only happened once at 500km low speed/rpm and the car was cold. I did put my car in storage since and can't wait till spring to see if it happens again.

My understanding is the differential is the same as the M3/4, are they having similar noises and issues?

Cool. In the meantime I'll wait right here for some answers to my 5 questions from folks who are convinced this is just rocks in the dust shields. Anyone? Hello?

I think all of us owners should bring this up to the dealer when you go in for your service. I will be this weekend for my break in service.

Put me in the 'I don't think it's rocks' camp. Does not sound right at all. Seems like there are just as many people that never see any rocks or pebbles as those that actually have something fall out.

Also, wouldn't you hear other sounds rocks and pebbles are making - like clanging around the wheel well, inside the wheels, bouncing all over the car. Because for that many people to have rocks stuck in a brake shield with no other sounds/symptoms is highly suspicious.

From reading the M3/M4 threads, most people find the sound to go away after some time. Whether they get new shields or not. To me, this sounds like some metal components wearing in/down.

It's hard to tell from the video, but mine sounds similar. The main difference is that mine will make noise only once. A quick "chirp" and be done. Never once has it made the noise longer then just a 1 second chirp.

This has happened probably 6 times in the first 1,000 miles I have had it. I haven't spent time trying to reproduce it like the video.

Question: For those with rocks...Is the sound of a stuck rock a quick chirp, or does it scrape for a few seconds before going away like a grinding noise? Does anyone have video of the rock noises to compare?

I have been passing off the noise as rocks even though it's incredibly loud and goes away very quickly. I figured the rocks scrap, make a deathly awful loud noise, and gets dislodged quickly.
