There is a post in general about dealer finding that they may have used the wrong oil in the diff and its now making noise. I remember from my E46M3, if you didn't use the SAF-XJ with FM, it made noises after awhile..

You would think they could get the basics correct...this isn't rebuilding a motor

I just obtained access to the official TSB for replacing the rear differential under warranty and under misc items and fluids they list part number 83-22-2-357-992 as the correct oil replacement. I believe this oil does not include friction modifiers shown as +FM on the label of -282-583 (and possibly -365-988). Apparently there may be another bulletin that goes into more depth on this, but I could not find it. Will no more on that later.

I could swear I've seen that in the manual as well... but I can't find it anymore XD it's not in the break-in section of it, or maintenance...

"At 1,200 miles/2,000 km
Have drive-in checkup maintenance performed."

This is quite vague...
Here ya go.

Ekris in Utrecht.

Everything went well I guess haha. Took almost a hour to replace the oils and some checks.

Yesterday received the quote, almost €350... So will call the dealership this week about that they have promised me that it was included in the price of the M2.

Already made more than 3000 km with the car.. It's going fast..

My invoice does not mention any diff fluid change. When I challenged this they said, oh yeah, we did it, but we forgot to put it on the invoice.

Make certain you keep that repair order. If anything ever goes wrong with the differential, you can assert (and the dealership cannot refute) that the dealership never replaced the differential oil at the 1,200 mile check.

I had the same situation where it does not say diff and engine oil was change and I also asked my service guy and all he said as long as it says 1200 mile service it is all inclusive but upon looking on the tsb the diff oil part number checks out as one of the parts use according to my invoice. Take a look at your invoice again.

Ok, let's get some things straight here

1. There is NO rev limit on the car from the factory. The dealer does not unlock anything in regards to this.
2. At the 1,200 miles service, Launch control is activated and if you have the M package, your top speed is unlocked.
3. No extra power is unlocked at the 1,200 mile point (yes, it is in our heads ). A friend of mine has a dyno and I really wanted to completely prove this - but heck, why - do note that as engines loosen up, they often make more power - so it stands to reason our cars "feel" faster as we put more miles on them.

And from all my searching I can find NOTHING that says BMW uses a different oil for the factory fill. Someone please prove it - of note, for you young ones on the board, the 1,200 mile service was not originally unique to the M cars - it was all BMWs at one point - because it is a smart thing to do NOT because the oil is different.

1200 mile service

Hi all,

Purchased an ex demo M2 with 1800 miles on the clock. Asked before purchasing if the 1200 mile service had been completed and told yes. Checked the onboard service schedule and no record of it. Called BMW head office and they have no record of a 1200 mile service but they said the dealer may not have done their admin yet but the 1200 mile would have been about 3 months ago. Should the car show this 1200 mile service? Thanks.

Hey guys, having some issues on my first service. BMW Korea says there is no need for an oil change or diff fluid change for 1200 miles and the service is really just a check of the car and running a scan tool.
I know this is wrong. They say if I don't do the 1200 mile service then I void the warranty, but I want the oil change so I'm going to get it done independently. I tried telling them the US, Europe, hell everywhere changes those items but they say "things are different here." Boy if I had a quarter for every time I've heard that over the past 4 years.

Get that in writing and signed by your dealer. Show them the manual and tell them to do it

Yes it will show it, no with a lot of details but it shows still.

I had to ask my dealer to give me the full details of what they have done because i didn't trust they did the rear diff oil change.... but they did.

It's not in the owner's manual, I've tried to look for it... however it's in the service manual, I found it on this forum but I don't know how public this is suppose to be ?

It is in the USA manual at least. See attached pic.

Also my car came with the service manual that shows oil change and diff fluid needs to be changed at 1200 miles. This was included in that small leather booklet with all the manuals and warranty documents. Yours should've too I think

Through this process I learned a lot about US warranties in another country, and apparently they don't even have a system or a way for them to get reimbursed for maintenance items. I'm not about to wait to get all this fleshed out, so I went ahead and paid a BMW specialty shop to change the oil and diff fluid, although I still need a dealer to clear the break in service on the computer. Hopefully I'll be able to get that done Saturday since it is like, 10 minutes of labor on their part. My guy has the BMW computer thingy (esys?) but since M2C's aren't sold in Korea at this moment in time his system didn't have it and he couldn't perform the reset.

I used Motul products and I love it so far, it's all I've used on past cars and it's a great fluid.

Is the 1200 mike break-in service covered by warranty, or do we pay for it?
