Is this the future of manual transmissions?

So even if BMW keeps the "manual" might it still lose the third pedal...

Anything is possible. But this technology or should I say the attempt isn?t new. Saab tried this in the early 90?s but the car failed miserably and there were quite a few issues with drivability.

My dad had a Porsche 911 (1980's) with a clutchless manual. It was horrible.

Isn't that just an SMG with a different shift pattern? Same horrible experience when you can't directly control the engagement / disengagement with the clutch.
