My SA informed me that not all cars get the warning. Mine did not. Apparently Sales associates should be informing owners and reminding them of the 1200 mile service. He recalled a certain M3 that did not have any warnings and the guy waited 5000 miles to have the break in service. Unfortunately, the motor failed and apparently BMW did not warranty the replacement. I actually found that pretty hard to believe, but he said it. I had my car serviced at about 1500 miles, no big deal. Not sure there was any difference in performance, but full throttle out to 6k rpm, the car is smooth and stable and really gets going. Great car.

You know, it might be worth a call to BMW. The dealer for sure will do your service, but someone messed up somewhere. They can query your car via BMW assist and should be able to see the issue. Either way, this is the first I've ever heard of this and I agree, it is bad. If you went to 10,000 miles before your first service, well, let's just say, certain things on the car would no longer be warrantied - and god help you trying to ever sell it cause that is a big red flag in the system (I looked at a M3 vert many years ago and the guy had gone 5,000 miles past his oil change and it was all over the service history).
