E85 Mix On California Gas

Good Evening,

I am extremely new to the BM3 platform and logging and I decided to try out 1 gallon of E85 mix today. I am from Southern California and I have a OG M2. The reason i did this was because after getting all the recommended mods for BM3 Stage 1 91ACN I was not pleased with the results. Below I will attach logs I took yesterday running BM3 Stg 1 91ACN with 1 gallon of E85 and next I will post a BM3 Stg 1 Octane (non-ACN) from the same fuel batch.

With these logs my biggest worries were my ignition timings. My HPFP target and actuals seemed pretty good in my opinion.

If I could get some feedback on it that would be amazing. I appreciate Nezil , tom @ eas , and Orange fever for giving me their two senses and knowledge.

The ACN logs don't look bad in my opinion. The non-ACN ones look like more octane is needed - maybe two gallons of E85 instead of one.
Remember, 91 ACN is truly terrible. I've also noticed recently that pump E85 is testing more like E70-E75 vs. the usual E80 in SoCal.

I've also been through this rodeo before. I wouldn't waste a lot of time trying to make power on any of the stage 1 maps or ACN maps. Save the headache and worries and stay with stock tune or get a downpipe and hpfp to run the stage 2 e30 maps.

I have had similar experiences to you. Dirty looking logs on Stage 1 and Stage 2 91 octane using SoCal gas (OC, LA, and SD). I typically run Stage 2 91ACN without issue, and occasionally grab some E85 and use the Stage 2 E30 blend. I do not have an upgraded HPFP, and have not had issues since I began using an ethanol tester at the pump. Like -Eidos said, there is some significant variance in the ethanol content at the pump. I believe the pump handles actually specify that they can range between 50%-83%. My HPFP is not maxed out with a 30 blend, and my timing corrections are minimal or nonexistent.

I have fairly similar mods to you, with the addition of a high-flow cat.

Agreed. Tried a lot of "set-ups" myself, explored a lot.
Stop messing with stage 1/2 91oct in SoCal. I've had perfect logs with stage 2 91acn(Shell 91). It's nice to drive, enough to have fun.
But I think sweet spot for N55 M2 is stage 2 E30 if ethanol is available. linear power band towards redline like stock tune. especially with good tires.
My butt tells me that stage2 E30 spools a little early than stage2+ E30.

Currently I'm running Stage 2+ E30 with upgraded HPFP for daily street sprinting or freeway pulls. More boost, more mid range torque but power will be dying down fast after 6500rpm.

If I'm pushing the car on track or any situation I need to keep rpms at high range, I'd stick with stage 2 E30. It just feels great.

I just put on the updated Stage 2 multimap, set to ACN 91 and I am now having a rough idle for about 2 seconds on initial cold startup that wasn't present on the regular Stage 2 ACN 91, I am going to play around with the tunes and let you know what I find.

Thanks man I appreciate it. I believe with the multi map flex fuel is enabled and it requires the BM3 flex fuel kit. That could be a reason why you’re idling.

The MultiMap tune works fine without a flex-fuel sensor. It just won't have the functionality of flex-fuel without it.

My car is at EAS right now getting an engine and diff oil change, but I am going to change the tune this evening and see if that resolves the idle issue. The odd thing is that it is only on initial startup for about two seconds and then resolves, the car is operating normally with just a little bit of timing correction on power pulls etc.

Did you by any chance disable the cold start cat heating in bm3? I did by accident when I flashed one time and noticed a rough cold start idle right away. I leave it enabled now and the issue hasn't been back since. Just a thought.

Yes, I have had the cold start cat heating disabled on my car since late 2020. With a high flow DP the car sounds like a tractor and is so loud on startup. I haven't had issues like this with the rough idle before on this (Stage 2 ACN 91) or any of the other BM3 tunes I have run, but I will trying turning it back on and see if that is related to the issue.

I was literally just talking to Kevin and I’m planning to install a WMI kit. He suggested the stage 2.5 from snow performance.

That’s freakin odd man I hope you get it all figured out!

Picked my car up from EAS, flashed the non-multimap Stage 2 91 ACN and the car is running totally normal now. No good explanation but it seems like the issue is resolved. Let me know if you end up running the snow kit, I’m intrigued by it.

I’ll let you know how the kit goes. Going to willow springs this august and planning to do the install after that.

Glad the car it’s normal now brotha.
