buying used cup2

what the general consensus on buying used tires? i have an opportunity to buy some used michelin cup2s with good tread on them for a good price. the build date of 2017 kinda concerns me though but ive been told that tires have a good 5-6 years in them before they are considered unsafe to use. but i dont know if this is the case for these cup2s since they are super high performance tires. other than reduced grip, what else could happen if i used these tires on the track? assuming there are no cracks in the rubber and no patches and with good tread, should i pull the trigger?

It's been my experience that if they don't have cracks they are safe, but the whole reason to buy Cup2's is for the grip, no? And as they age/heat cycle, it's just not there anymore. It'd be pretty easy to get more grip out of a far inferior, but newer tire. Sounds weird, but in my experience it's true.

Maybe one of the track rats has had a different experience.

RE71RS FTW, just sayin'.

I wouldn't buy used tyres for anything other than burnouts or drifting. Perhaps for daily use on a non-performance car...

Your car deserves good, fresh rubber for the track.

lol id love to get some of dem re71s one day.

hmm im gonna ask the seller if the tires were ever pushed on the track. fom the pics, they look like they have never had that much heat to them and i dont see any feathering to suggest they were ever pushed that much

For cup2s, no. Any other street tire, you're probably ok. When a semi slick tire age even a couple of months the compound will harden permanently. Cup2 tires dated back to 2017 will have no heat cycle left and you'll be driving on rock basically.

Unless you can get them for like 200 bucks a set haha. Then it doesn't hurt to try them out

But im wondering, what if these tires were never taken to the track? Would they hve been heated up enough to count as heat cycled?

Also, I believe they need to be stored above freezing to not degrade. Might be an issue given your location.

Yup, forgot about that, and didn't even look at his location.

From tirerack:

WARNING: Pilot Sport Cup 2 radials meet DOT requirements; however, they are not recommended for driving in wet conditions where standing water is present and there is the risk of hydroplaning; drivers should drive cautiously at reduced speeds if they encounter these conditions. This is especially true of shaved or worn tires. And like other Streetable Track & Competition tires, these tires are not intended to be stored, serviced nor driven in near- or below freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.
