Same here -- MY2017. One of first things I noticed on drive home from dealer pickup last weekend through winding mountain roads with heavy redwood tree canopy shade was washed out/no contrast gauges. Also, backlight on dash would not stay on when switch set to auto due to ambient daylight conditions.

Has anyone tried putting electrical tape over the cabin ambient light sensor shown at 4 o'clock position near the "AUTO" knob on left in photos above?

I'm going to give that a try when I get home this evening.

Same here on MY2017, definitely a poor design choice on those gauges.

I just checked the safe car web sight and there is only (1) 2 series BMW complaint about this issue. I think complaints can be filed on-line, if enough folks complain then maybe they can force the company to fix this.

That's a complete joke. And the fact that BMW hasn't revised the tacho for MY17 is even worse.

I bet. Something needs to be done surely. Maybe in the LCI version?

I sent an email direct to BMW Australia regarding the issue, they were no help and just referred me back to the dealership.

Great. As soon as I take delivery, I will check this out and file a complaint as well, as long as I see it. I'm sure all the folks reporting this are not wrong.

The more that send this along the better chance that something might get done, especially if it is a safety issue.

I'd be surprised if it can't be coded.
Yes, the back light is off during daylight when set to 'auto'.

I think the main issue is with the back light being orange it still doesn't improve things greatly during the day even if it's on.

I bet it could be coded to work... if Head Light = on AND cluster light sensor = Off THEN Cluster = white light.

Is it even possible for the cluster to illuminate in white other than the fuel gauge? Right now its either off or orange.

IMHO the digits are too small though.
But not at the same time you see the posted speed indicator!

I thought I read that it could, so I was just surmising with the coding, maybe wishful thinking!

It does not work, I covered every sensor I could find, the only one remaining is the rain sensor.

Any solid news on coding? I'm anxious to pick my car up and see just how bad it is
