Mate, honestly, it's not that bad, I get on fine with it. It could be better when you go under the trees but it's not unreadable, and if your going fast then you wouldn't notice as you won't be looking at the cluster. Trust me, it's nit picking.

That's good to hear. All in all not many complaints on the car other then these little nuances

Agreed, I tried the sensor covering game too couldn't get it to turn on. It's not a real problem it just looks like it should be illuminated with the lcd displays below it in a nice illuminated bright white.

I have wondered if this is more an issue of contrast versus actual "dim" lights. I've never had an issue with my 135, but all instruments are analog except the small digital display that is amber. Looking at the pictures of the M2 dash with the LCD displays under the speed and tach it has seemed like there will be times the display brightness outshines the "bulb" brightness.

I should (hopefully) see what it's like for myself in a month.

Definitely a contrast issue and not a backlight issue. All 8 of my owned BMWs have had white numbers on a black background. Very high contrast. The M2 has white/silver-ish numbers on a dark titanium background. Much lower contrast. Also, switching the headlights on manually and with it the back lights does not solve the problem.

Agree -- it did not work for me, either.

Is it possible to get inside the gauge cluster? It would be easy to create a PCB that could drive some LEDs to illuminate the cluster and have it's own ambient light sensor inside the cluster area.

The LCD display doesn't detract from the speedo lighting or lack of as it's very dim.

It's both imo.If you take the fuel gauge as an example this is perfectly illuminated unlike the main display sections which can't be read in certain conditions and is uneasy on the eye at the best of times.

It would certainly be easier to code the back light as it already exists.

This cluster is not a big issue to me at all. Definitely not a great design, but you can easily just turn on DIGITAL speedo if it's an issue- problem solved. I got used to it after a few days.

M2 speedo is a 100x better than the horrible one in 911. I can NEVER tell the speed looking at the analog readout as porsche decided to bunch tiny numbers (200mph) into 180 degrees and I only use the digital readout.

Moral of this post, it could be much worse.

Maybe this was asked before - any chance to code digital speed like in the F8x? Honestly, I look at the digital speed 80% ish vs. mechanical gauge

No need to code to access the digital speed display, it's already available on the dash albeit the readout is pretty small.

Thanks prodigy! Does it have to be activated or is it standard like on the m3?

You do kind of have to activate it, you just cycle through mpg, temp guage, digital speed etc, i assume similar to the M3 unless the M3 is a fixed digital display.

I can see the analog gauges just fine in my 17 but the digital display below the gauges can be hard to see during the day

For me, this is an issue. I had the car coded and asked if the orange dash lights could be programed to stay on all the time. The coder could not find the values to change it.
