Is there a reason BMW wouldnt make an M2?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I think we can all agree that the 235 should actually be an IS instead of an M badge infront of it Im not saying the 235 is bad becasue it is an absolutely incredible vehicle, im just not sure why BMW chose to stick an M badge on it. So while we wait for a M2, can you guys think of a reason why the M division wouldnt actually make an M? If one truly is in the works and i hope one is i dont think we will see it until 2017?

It's already being made. We will start to see prototypes soon, I think. There will be some new news soon. Trust me.
As for the "iS".... BMW is trying to create a niche within the brand... instead of using the "iS" badge they are going with three levels of cars offered: AG cars, "M Performance" cars, and true(hard core) ///M models. I feel that BMW is cashing in on the ///M name... but whats done is done, when we now have a fwd 2er that can be ordered with M badges on it or even a 6er GC with them. Last year almost 60% of the AG cars had the "M sport" option box ticked. So this is a big money maker for the company.

Gents,
Was at the local Dealer here in Brisvegas today, booking my F30 in for its first service. Managed to get some time with my sales guy. I asked him to show me the M235 and a Z4, and we got talking about the likelihood of the M2. He was emphatic that it is not currently planned, and went further to say that the 1M was only a limited run as there was a six months production gap at one of the plants that needed to be filled. His advice was that unless there is another production gap at one of the plants, and he isn't aware of one any time soon, there wouldn't be an M2. Utter shame. After the success of the 1M, this is the one car that would sell itself. I guess that time will tell. EGC |

QUOTE] This would make sense - if the car is going to debut as a 2016 MY, then they surely need to be in the testing phase soon... Time will tell - but I agree with the OP - BMW saw the potential for a baby M with the 1M, and now they can produce one in greater numbers and with a higher profit margin. Everyone wins....

M2 will happen for a number of reasons. There just seems to be too much positive press regarding the 2 series. I forget who posted it, but BMW is testing a turbo I6 M-division car internally. That little bit of info was what squashed the turbo 4 rumors. I expect that release will be late 2016/2017, but who knows.
I don't really see a reason for BMW to not make an M2 unless they can't make the car they want within their pricing contraints. Truthfully, though, I would expect a slighly flawed M2 rather than no M2 if what they want to build becomes too expensive. Even that, though, is unlikely given M-divisions history and what they were able to do with the 1M. |

Yes. BMW is putting M badges on its entire lineup now. Even the FWD 2er Active Tourer. I took these pics at Geneva... and even on a 6er GC...

BMW is now about ultra-segmentation, which is the only thing that large of a company can turn to in order to further boost sales. Not producing an M2 would go against this strategy.
