Can someone explain Sport + on my new M2 please

For reference I just turned in a 2015 M235i with 8speed auto. I was dying to get back into a 6speed manual and recently acquired a 2018 M2 6speed. I was very use to my M235i and the 4 driving modes and how they differed.

Eco- rarely used, mostly to check what the hell it was.
Comfort- Everyday driving when I wanted to drive without ASM intruding in the cabin.
Sport- Rarely used since I hated all the traction control interference.
Sport+ I spent 95%+ of my time in this mode while having the car the 3 years I leased it. It provided a decent amount of slip which allowed me to hang the back end out when desired.

2018 M2
Comfort- I see this as my stealth mode while in neighborhoods or long road trips.
Sport- Traction control engaged with what appears to be very similar to my M235i’s Sport mode. I doubt I’ll use this ever.

Sport+ Here’s where I need some help! While I haven’t hit BMW’s recommended 1200 miles for break in nor have I scheduled the 1200 miles service I’m trying to figure out why the traction control is kicking in so readily? I’m not doing anything crazy but if I’m in a corner going 25 mph and give it half throttle and a bit more steering angle thinking the back end you step out a bit like it did in the M235i the traction control lights kick in and stop any rotation from occurring. Note my M235 had a port installed LSD so I’m familiar with the feel of that. I rarely had my traction lights kick in in Sport + on the M235i. Is this something that will change after the 1200 mile dealer service? Like they disable full function of this mode until that service interval is completed? I know I can turn everything off and do what I please with the car but I’m not all that interested in that. Thoughts? Thanks for your responses in advance.

It's normal, you can't slide these cars much with the traction on. If you want to slide a little more you can code in Euro MDM or just turn DSC completely off.

I can't speak about the M235i stability control, but I can say that I too felt that the MDM settings (found in Traction and Sport+ modes) were way too aggressive / restrictive. I coded in the European MDM mode, and it's way better. Try that and see what you think; 5 mins work, if that.

Most of us drive in sport or sport +. I am in sport 99% of the time. The throttle response in comfort is too slow for me.

I have an ASD bypass harness so the sound of comfort and sport is the same.

Curious if your tires are overinflated?

Just wondering, is the sound in Sport+ any different than Sport/Comfort with the ASD bypass harness?

It is. The fueling is different for every driving mode and each one all has its own unique sound. If you have ASD off and a downpipe and/or an upgraded exhaust it becomes very obvious and easy to tell the difference between each one.

I think Dan is talking about the character of the sound wrt ASD within the cabin, and once that is bypassed, there is no sound change within the cabin between the 3 drive mode. With ASD, you can be tooling along at a steady state 30mph with light throttle pressure, flip the drive mode from comfort to sport, and hear an immediate increase in decibels . I have not found that to occur with ASD removed. What we DO hear however is a big difference in the pops and crackles on overrun between the 3 drive modes, and a little more sound from the exhaust, but thats mainly under hard acceleration in sport and sport+.

This is not public knowledge, but while developing the M2 Competition, BMW shipped some prototype M2's with an S55. My guess is you received one of those. It pre-spools the turbos, so you have a lot more instant torque down low with no lag.

That is exactly what I was saying. Thanks.

One is the one sentence description of each mode? In the manual it says sports oriented chassis for sport+ but the chassis doesn't change does it??

COMPLETELY OFF TOPIC...

My M3 feels much more "laggy" than my M2 did. Never really drove them back to back, so going by memory of course, but the N55 felt soooo much more responsive.

You have two configurable Sport modes in IDrive. One refers to Chassis, and the other to Powertrain.. In our cars, the 'Chassis' setting ONLY pertains to the stiffness of the steering feel (since we dont have adaptive suspensions). The other setting, 'Powertrain' refers to throttle response and possibly exhaust note although Im not positive about the latter.. The main takeaway is that its a misnomer to call the steering feel 'chassis' setting, but its a carryover from those vehicles which do have the adaptive suspension settings.

So no, the Chassis settings dont change (as it pertains to the suspension)
