I'm currently looking for a used M2 and found a listing.

-clean title
-39,000 miles
-Not under warranty anymore

Any issues to look out for?
And how much should one of these go for? (USD)

Roughly 46k give or take?

They’re reliable as hell for a BMW which is why they’re so great. Get a PPI from an independent BMW certified mechanic and go nuts. Look for oil weeping from the oil pan or oil filter housing gasket. Look for leaking diff seals and axles.

See if it’s had a history of tuning by checking with ISTA.

Actually going for $42k. I've never bought a used car ever. Does the seller pay for PPI at the dealer?

Oh wow you are green. PPI or Pre-Purchase Inspection is paid for at buyers expense. If it’s at a dealer, preferably not them as they’re a biased party. Locate an independent BMW shop and ask them if you can pay to have it inspected by X indi. If they can’t make the vehicle available for a PPI tell em to kick rocks.

I waived a PPI on mine but it was still under warranty, otherwise it’s mandatory imo.

I’m just some guy on the internet.. but with that disclosure out of the way…

Whether or not it makes sense for you to purchase an extended warranty or not has a lot to do with your own personal financial situation in my opinion. The car itself is incredibly reliable, and as far as BMWs are concerned, it’s one of the most reliable they make.

The engine has been developed and refined over time which makes this particular chassis so desirable. Both the N55 and the S55 cars. Stated another way, the OG & the Comps.

I put 23,000 trouble free miles on mine and you can find plenty of other people on this forum with anecdotal evidence of these cars doing 100,000 miles without any issue including track days.

So, knowing that the car is incredibly reliable, the question becomes, can you easily cash flow the odd $1000 issue that pops up without being bothered. If so, then the extended warranty is likely a losing gamble. If not, then you shouldn’t be buying the car to begin with.

Good luck. It’s one of the best cars in the game and my life is infinitely better for getting to enjoy it on and off the track.

Are you purchasing from a bmw dealer? Any maintenance history available? What's the car fax show? Any visible modifications?

That is where I would start.

The extended warranty might depend upon how many miles you are going to drive the car per year.

It’s priced to move but it’s private party so I guess it’s not scary low. Pull the CarFax to get some vehicle ownership history. Get the seller to provide any and all maintenance records.

Also, don’t buy an M2 to commute 20k miles a year. It’ll get old. I’d be looking at a 2017 M340i instead. Softer suspension, longer wheelbase, B58 is reliable, stout, and loves mods.

I am seeing non LCI (2016 and 2017) cars selling for below 40k at this point so depending on if this is a dct or 6mt and what color, the price can probably come down some, ever since the summer has ended prices are dropping like a rock.

Anyway the N55 is very reliable but there is that possible engine failure issue due to oil starvation after oil changes or oil filter housing gasket change, seen a few threads about that but if engine is primed after oil changes it seems to be ok.

Never seen a thread about engine failure on OG F87 after an oil change.

I am the original owner of a 2016 and just about to hit 80K miles. The only two major issues were the replacement of the charge air duct at 79,295 miles and exhaust flap actuator at 71,659. Trunk latch replaced at 61,023.

I agree. I don’t find this car uncomfortable at all. And I have taken long trips with it.

I dont feel like searching for it right now but at least for non M2 variant N55 it was/is a problem, fairly certain the M2 variant has the same issue. I saw a OG m2 for sale on facebook with a new engine due to this issue after talking with the owner. Might be rare but it does happen.

I enjoy trips with it too. It’s a great multi purpose tool, I just wouldn’t personally choose it for an interstate car which I assume someone doing 20k is seeing. 20k around town? Sure, throw some TC Kline’s on it and smile away.

Insurance is a business and they’re not in the business of giving away money. I don’t have any interest in explaining this in detail to someone who doesn’t already understand that self-insuring $2-3000 in maintenance is a better option.

There are helpless people out there, and dealer service centers and insurance companies are happy to take their money.

Same here. I drive my F80 17k miles a year and couldn’t imagine driving a non-M car every day when I have one sittting in the garage. Get old? Never did for me. Life is too short. Don’t save your car for the next owner.
