6 speed manual

Hello all, does anyone know what the final drive ratio is in the M2 manual vs the DCT. I have heard that the 6 speed could use another gear when driving long distance on highway, almost like it was revving higher than the DCT. Anyone have comparisons of both. I plan on doing some long trips and wondered if this is true.

I'm not sure of the specifics but I can say that the manual M2 turns around 3000 rpm at my typical cruising speed of around 74 mph. Note - I use my speed limit "plus 9mph free pass rule of thumb" in NY. In addition I note that the engine revs do not become taxing on me on a long highway drive since the car is relatively quiet and composed at this cruising speed. Don't settle for a DCT just because of this perceived issue. It is in fact not an issue at all.

That's good to hear. I have ordered the manual and was a bit concerned from some posts I have read.

The DCT definitely cruises at a lower RPM but if MT owners say it's not an issue, then it's not an issue.

Could you post what your M2 DCT rpm is at 74 mph? That would be definite proof.

Looked about 2250 at 74 on flat highway in 7th. 6th was somewhere around 3k but I didn't pay too close attention.

6mt could definitely use a 7th gear for highway speeds. Really my only complaint w the M2, the gearing is way off for the amount of torque available down low.

BMW could have given 6th gear slightly taller gearing for highway driving, but this is a very small issue and should in no way deter you from buying the 6MT. Buy the 6MT - you will not regret it.

Anyone have the mph at redline in each gear for MT and DCT? Or rpm (and associated mph) for optimal shift points?

See BMW web page or a magazine like CAR AND DRIVER.

I have found the ratios and posted them in the past. The DCT Has an extra cog, but the extra cog is at the TOP of the box and gives you a second Overdrive.

Just takes gear ratios and a calculator ... ( or search for a spreadsheet on the internet )

The gearing is so damn short on this car, especially with the DCT. Definitely designed for track duty.

So redlining in 3rd gear, the MT is at 93mph while the DCT is at 84. It's illegal to hit the rev limiter in 3rd with either transmission.

As for cruising, with the MT in 6th you go 72@3000rpm and 84@3500. With the DCT in 7th, you're at 76@2500 and 92@3000. So the MT is definitely running harder on the interstate.

The final ratio for both is 3.73

Calculations made using the link from CLH.

Still getting the '18 MT

I agree with the comments for a longer 6th gear. 80mph is my highway cruising speed and 3100rpm with the MPE yields a fair amount of drone. However, 70 or 90 mph is no problem. Also, Ive never used 6th gear on my "local" higher speed tracks.

End of my unproductive venting
