This seems backwards. Oil temp is usually higher than coolant temp. Anytime I’ve logged it that’s always been the case.

What you will also notice is in Comfort mode both will be around 215F. When in Sport or higher, coolant drops to 165F and oil to 195F. I’ve never seen the gauge move specifically with oil or coolant temp. Seems to be an average as others have stated.

Today i could check the temps on a 200+ km trip, normal road speed and highway speed. In comfort the oil temp varied from 106-109 C, the water was 105-108 C. In sport the oil was 95-103 C, the water was 81-84 C. Outside temp was 15-17 degrees.
When it's in sport the water is significantly cooler than oil. At the same time the dashboard still shows around 95, that's why i think it shows only the oil temp. LCI. |

The LCI dash has a marked readout starting at 160F, 4 minor marks then a major mark that isn't labeled, and then another 4 minor marks and a major mark labeled 250F. I'm not quite sure how this scale is supposed to be read, since it's a 90 degree spread but 11 increments total (8 minor, 3 major, one of which isn't labeled). This would put each mark roughly 8.2 degrees?? Very strange; maybe the scale makes more sense in Celsius? In any case, after warming mine up and then cruising on the highway for a while, it was sitting at the midpoint mark and then a mark or two past there. The midpoint would be roughly 201F, but two marks past is ~217F which is much higher than I would expect water temp to read on normal cruising. I also have no idea why the scale reads as high as it does (it goes past 250); water/coolant should *never* get that high since it will be exploding out of the expansion tank once it is past 250. I wish the scale would be sensible and show actual temp starting from 50F or something sane. Instead, it just sits at "160F" when the car is still cold, which is complete bollocks.

My understanding is on the pre-LCI - cold/OK msg is coolant temp and the bar chart graphic with pointer indicates oil temp. I've seen 'OK' msg and pointer still all way the to the left indicating coolant in range and oil temp isn't. I wouldn't start "booting it" until oil temp is above coolant temp so as oil is lubricating and the coolant is primary for regulating the engine temperature. I know air to oil heat exchanger is located on RHS front but whereabouts is water to oil heat exchanger on the M2 ? BP

Don't need numbers for oil temp. it's a gauge. Get a carista and Bimmerlink app if you want read outs

I tried tracking this since I like seeing the mileage readout rather than the temp gauge. When the car changes from COLD to OK, I've seen the oil temp at ~175F (or 80C for those like me that prefer Celsius). Several notches left of center... sorry its not scientific, but usually I'm not that eager to gun it (and my commute is short). I will try to pinpoint it sometime in the future. I have a MY2018, and although I won't comment on whether it's an oil or coolant gauge, I have noticed a difference in cooling profile when driving in different modes.
I actually find it useful to drive around in Comfort Mode for a while, to warm the car up. Then after I'm past the first notch on the gauge I'll switch to Sport+ for more spirited driving. I noticed that I can't get it higher than that first notch, especially out of Comfort Mode. And if I switch to Sport or Sport+ it actually goes down to around that first notch after a couple of minutes of driving. |

It warms just as fast in traction mode. On DSC off it has the same increased cooling as Sport though.
