M2: idem.

What cars did you have before the E82, Luc?

Always preferred keeping it under 4500mm (177.2 inch): E46 M3 6MT and E46 M3 SMGII.

Keepin' it 'compact sized' again with the M2: 4468mm (175.9 in).

Do you miss the S54?

Due to the engine layout: the sound.

I'm not related to the video below (Vancouver), but it's pretty recognizable:

Never had a CSL. Now that carbon airbox could sing gloriously:

I knew it was an E46! I don't know why, but I did.

It's pretty sad I'll probably never have the chance to experience a N/A M car. They're going up in value and I don't know anyone with an old-school ///M... Or a Porsche.

My friends had so many E36 and E46 Ms that I've driven countless times...I know people are excited for the M2 and all...but I don't think anything will live up to the raw visceral sound and feel of the E46 M3. M235i is pretty much a modern US E36 M3, which is great, but lacking the metallic sound and laser sharp throttle response.

So you're planning on buying an M2 convertible IF it comes out(dunno if there are any plans @ BMW for producing an M2 conv) and you want to replace your Elise with that or keep the Elise?

1M on OEM supension and tyres already is kinda rough/bumpy for a DD imho. But I like it.

Cheers

I'm keeping the Elise SC - I've never owned a car as exciting as that, except maybe the Caterham Super 7 but I was too tall for it and the buffeting was a nightmare. I have a 330d which I bought new 12 years ago and needs replacing soon (205,000 kms) but I get so much pleasure from driving a convertible in the mountains where I live that the M2 coupe just won't do. It absolutely has to be a convertible. And if BMW don't bring one out I might just say F... it and buy a Mini JCW cabrio for my daily driver. I haven't tried the 235i as the garage only had a 135i and I wasn't terribly impressed by the latter. It wallowed, had soft suspension and was far too quiet even if it had good performance. I also tried the 225d convertible and that was a very capable relatively rapid car but totally totally lacking in sensations. So, for the moment I wait... and wait... and wait

You need to sell the Elise and drive a less extreme car for six months, then step into an M car. M can't defy the laws of physics. The Lotus has half of the mass an an M2 and a convertible will will be even heavier.

The good news is the M car will feel like an S Class Benz compared to the Elise comfort wise. You won't need earplugs on a 2 hour drive.

The last two JCWs I have driven have been good, but, for me, not in the same league as the BMWs. M Sport or M Performance really makes a difference in the driving experience. I would prefer to have a 228i M Sport or M235i over a JCW, but I am in California and don't know your preferences or your mountain roads. The Santa Monica mountains are speed bumps compared to the Alps. Hopefully they will make you an M2 vert and this will be moot.

Roads like this LOL. No hill start assist on a Lotus, just a good old manual transmission and handbrake !
