I did hear a weird metallic noise coming from the rear of my car today, but I also had my old M235i exhaust and intake in the trunk so it could have just been them moving around and making the noise. I'll have to take them out and listen for anything else.

Has anyone entered their VIN on the mybmw website, had it say that there are no open recalls for your vehicle, and still heard the crunch noise? I ask b/c my car was produced during the affected dates but the mybmw website says there are no open recalls for it. I guess I'll truly know once I drive it...

Won't the dealer have to hear it themselves anyway? If it happens one time and can't be reproduced I doubt they would approve a new diff if you aren't on the initial list from pre July.

Ok, my car is definitely affected by this differential issue, I'd heard the sound once last night, but then about 5 minutes ago it did it twice in quick succession driving about 10 miles an hour. It sounded exactly like crunching a soda can. First showed up at 663 miles and I've heard it twice in 5 miles since then.

My CA checked and confirmed that my car is not scheduled for a rear diff upgrade (yet). I guess it's only a matter of time before I'll get the replacement news. Almost 12K kms clocked in the meantime and my rear diff is still performing properly (apart from making those occasional 'grumpy' noises).

Just picked up my car two days ago. The dealer's service writer told me my car would require replacement of the differential eventually and he had no idea of when the replacement diff would be available. He said that BMW would replace the diffs in priority based on need, i.e. the ones that are making the loudest noise get replace first. I doubt that. On the way home from the dealership I noticed that there was a whining noise each time I coasted to a stop with car in gear. The sound reminded me of the drive train noise made by the 1955 Chevy driven by James Taylor in the classic movie, "Two-Lane Blacktop". I know, the reference is weird, but honestly it made me think of that movie right away. I now have 102 miles on the car and the whining continues, but no can crushing noise.... yet!

at least the re bolt recall makes "visible" the issue with the diff!
Funny they make a recall of an operation to fix an "no existing" recall

Since picking up our Feb build car in April we have been experiencing a metallc rattle coming from the rear of the car on certain road surfaces. This is not the soda can noise others have been describing on here.
This was pointed out to the dealer at the 1200 mile service. Subsequently the dealer had the car for 6 days over several further visits and racked up almost 200 miles (!) trying to trace it's origin. It had a new shock absorber fitted prior to them identifying the diff as the potential problem. Last week it was returned after a three week wait to have the new diff fitted. When I went to collect it I was informed that the diff had been fitted, but unfortunately it was not a compatible fit with the propshaft! Our car is now having the original diff re-fitted whilst a new one is ordered -again! Still... We have the delights of a 218d whilst it's in the sick bay... |
