23 m240i or 2018 m2
Curious to know anyone's take on this as I am split between cars.
I have a 23 m240i that's being delivered at some point (january?) but I can't get the stupid bmwusa website to work. I saw a 2018 m2 with 26732 miles on it. Here's the VIN WBS1J5C58JVD37179. It is from a dealer, but no idea about a PPI. What would you guys take? m2 is cheaper by about 4k compared to MSRP of the m240i, i'm not sure what the used/new loan finance details would be. Part of my thoughts on it is the appeal of an M2 versus the fact that it will be a 5 year old car. |

I don't think you posted this in the correct forum as this is for the new G87. But since you're here….
I think the OG is a fine car and I think more special than the new M240 but I'd probably take the M240 in this case. A few reasons: 1. At $47k for a 2017, that is about 9k +\- less than what that car costs new. You'd be buying at a cost that surely will take a hit as soon as the market corrects. I personally wouldn't go more than $40-$42k for that car. 2. In 2018, there were some interior changes so the 2017 has the even older interior. 3. The N55 sounds nice but will always carry the stigma of not being an M engine. At a lower cost, I'd look past this but not at $47k. 4. No warranty 5. Looks wise - M2 all the way. 6. DCT is also an upgrade over the M240. If this were a comp or if it was a manual (which you can't get with the 240) then there's be more reason to lean M2 but at even cost for a 6 year old car with almost 50k miles , unknown past and reliability, no warranty, I'd look elsewhere. But that's me. |

I'll take a swing as well. I would choose the G42 M240 over the OG M2. Not only does it out perform, but it also has iDrive 8 which is leaps and bounds better than iDrive 6 (or maybe 5?). I want remote start and better voice command options. The only reason to go F87 is if you really like the looks better or have to have a manual.

Two very different cars. Do you want a car that will feel more like a traditional RDW sports car with decent power or do you want an AWD rocket? As someone else pointed out, you also have the difference between iDrive 6 and iDrive 8. If you can find a iX at a dealer near you, ask to sit and take a look. I was a bit skeptical myself but was easily won over. You'll also have wireless CarPlay Android Auto as well as a warrantee. Unless you're really sure you want the traditional RWD experience, I'd steer you towards the M240i.

G42 is a better product than the OG M2. Tech, interior, adaptive suspension, B58, xDrive, warranty. G42 is on par with M2 Comp.
OG M2 bought correctly will depreciate slower than the G42. |

Had this same predicament earlier this year in March and went with the OG M2, 2018, black shadow edition with just under 30,000km on it.
Wanted it to be RWD and more of a handful, you have to work more to drive it, it seems more playful. Wife has the sensible daily so when we take the M2 I always want it to feel like a special occasion. The looks are night and day in comparison, the M2 has so much more presence. Will be driving it in the Canadian winter too, that was never a concern with a good set of winter tires. Bought full extended warranty up to 100,000km with no time limit - full piece of mind if anything does go wrong but it seems like they're fairly reliable if taken care of. All in all the M2 just seems like a more special car, you feel like you're driving something iconic, the hype is real. The M240 is great but ultimately just another fun little sports car. I feel like if you get the M240 you'll always wonder about the M2 and think what if. There will be plenty of great awd sports cars, but there will not be another OG M2, light, nimble, and praised by all. |

This guy gets it. Basically you can either be practical or you can drive an M2.

Let's be honest here. The M240ix is quite ugly. The M2 is definitely the way I would go.

really just depends what you want. Do you want tech and comfort ? or a drivers car ? The M2 will be more fun. the 240 will be a better daily for a commute, rough roads, stop and go traffic, etc.
personally i can't stand the zf8 and how terrible it is when you're pushing the car on the backroads or just want to cruise in manual mode. so i'd go OG M2.

Get the M2. It's like a sore dick, you can't beat it.

tough one....240 new...faster in a straight line-WARRANTY
but damn the OG/Cs just look so bad ass and with a manual to boot. I use mine only on the weekends-and now its paid off butt is put away for the winter... is this a daily or a weekender go kart? Id go 240 tbh if its a daily and wouldn't look back. But it'll just be another car on your LA roads if you good with that. |

How bad do you want an “M” car? I’ve had a 228i, and driven a non M car, and now own an OG M2, and let me tell you, an M car is its own thing. IMO, you can’t make a non M car a M car, so IMO that should be the deciding factor.

It’s an M2 forum so you know the answer you’ll get but let me put it this way:
Just play this same scenario 20 years ago. You can buy a used e36 m3 or a new e46 330i, what do you do? Even more extreme 25 years ago, you can take a used e30 m3 or new e36 325i, what do you pick? The new one fits the times, has warranty, better tech, heck is even faster. But it fades, it has nothing special to it, it’s more utility than pleasure. 10 out of 10 times the M car will be more special, respected more, enjoyed more. A car you’ll want to keep forever if possible. One of the two cars your considering was created by the ///M division, the other was made to make profits to help the M division make more M cars

My S2000 is nearly 18 years old but it's as much of a blast to rip around a mountain road as it was in 2005. OG M2 looks better, drives better, and weighs less. No one is making the case that the 2023 M240i is a better drivers car than an M2. Do you want a drivers car? There is no stigma, only people who don't know shit about shit so why would anyone care what they think? |
