So, if all these engines are broken in from the factory, why do we have rev limitations. Check this guy out...he probably got a new M2 from the dealer for review, and with 11 miles on it he's in M2 mode shifting at 7k rpm YIKES!!!
See near 20 minute mark Be honest guys, how high did you guys go during break in? speed and rpm |

I'm just under 1100 miles, I haven't gone higher than ~5200 except once about a month ago. Went up to 6-7 when I forgot to put the car back into auto shift.

Cool. I've only hit 5k twice and that too in Sport + mode with auto shifting. When shifting myself, I shift at about 4-4.5k

There is nothing magic about 1,200 miles/ 2,000 km. It is as much about not annoying you to bring you car in right after you bought it, as it is you getting to know your car and not killing yourself. The fact is, the engine, trans, rear diff, and brakes are broken in during the first couple of hundred miles.
I would personally have the fluids changed at the one year mark even if you are not at 1,200 miles and no, they don't change the trans fluid nor does it need to be. Interesting read here https://www.enginelabs.com/news/disp...mance-academy/

I just chuckle when some folks here claim that BMW unlocks the true power at the run-in service or the latest rumor spewing in the G20 section, where some owners are convinced that BMW added "break-in oil," at the factory. I would love to sell each one of them some Magic Turbo Beans |

I am not mechanical at all, so the way I see it is...you can't go wrong with following the manual.

Babying the car for the first couple hundred miles, is not a great thing. You don't need high rpm, but you certainly should do some pulls, keeping the engine under a nice load and then letting off. Actually many say this is more important in the first 10-100 miles assuming the car is warmed up. But like I said, after the first few hundred, nothing magic is happening. Go easy, go hard, whatever - that's not going to change much.

I didn't really baby mine during the run in period, not sure if that'll make a difference in the long run but for the first 4-500 miles it was driven pretty aggressively, then I slowed down until run in.

I broke mine in just driving it... Didn't baby it, didn't beat the shit out of it, just normal driving. The usual putting around, a few pulls here and there, hit 7k rpm a couple times. I was under the impression the break-in is more for the diff than anything, and then the tranny, so I made sure to make slow and deliberate shifts, no launches... But for the engine and getting in boost, just normal stuff.

Guys, getting my 1200mi service done tomorrow finally!
it has been a HARD month trying to resist this car... it always wants you to push *just a little bit more* XD Question, after the service. is it pretty much play as hard as you want or do you still need a little more time of babying this thing? confession: I hit 6k once during break in... |
