He means it’s more fun to drive a slow car (mini) fast than a fast car (M2) slow. Being that you really can’t wring the M2 out on the street without risking jail time, while the mini you can push harder without going as fast.

Is the challenge more getting use to rear wheel drive after having driven front wheel drive so long?
Back in the day I had a really nice 750cc bike. Took it in for service and they gave me this little crappy 100cc loaner. I drove that thing hard, it felt fast, quick to accelerate, sounded cool winding it out and I was like why do I need the 750cc this thing is a hoot...then I came back to my senses You're comparing apples to oranges. |

It's just funny how hp figures keep climbing, and our conception of what a powerful car is evolves to match. I remember when 300hp was a powerful car and 400 seemed exotic. Now, the upcoming G20 340i (or M340i if you will) will come from the factory with 385hp. That's a big figure for a 3 series. For that matter, the most recent Camry offers a v6 trim that packs 300hp. We live in an era when one can get a 300hp Camry, and soon, a nearly 400hp 3 series. Anyway, apologies for the somewhat off-topic post. |

I was talking about his mini cooper. The M2 classifies as fast car fast for me! Quote:

I agree with the overall package you state above...although sexy I'm not 100% on board with... I am saying that you don't get to enjoy these things in a city situation. You can't race this car around town. It is too dangerous. If you want the full experience of this car it has to be at the track. On the other hand a smaller hot hatch like a MINI JCW you get to redline it and throw it around corners without going to a track. It is not as fast, I would say however the JCW is pretty nimble, but you get to use it more. I drive my M2 more slowly and can't weave in traffic the way I could in my MINI. This is partly because I am still learning to drive my M2 but mainly the fact it is 2 feet shorter and 1000lbs lighter. Listen, I am not saying I don't like this car. I do like it. It is just a different experience.

Guess the big thing is the M2 is way better at faster speeds. I hit speeds in this car like I would never have in the MINI. Thing is our roads and other drivers are NOT designed for these speeds. After all the Germans likely have a different driving perspective with the roads they have. Like the 750 Honda tickets will be the biggest problem. One ticket for 130mph and that is the end of this car.....I'll be riding a 100cc scooter!

I have more fun with it around town than on the highway. Windows down without too much wind noise and fast accelerations up to mostly legal speeds, and turning.

Wanted to update this tread. Some of you got my points, some of you didn't.
I have a whole new perspective now - I took the car to the track! Some thoughts for you that have not done this: -Get an instructor. They will know the track and can really help. They changed a couple of things and my performance and confidence really improved. - You use a shit load of gas. I pretty much toasted a tank in 2 hours. - I run PSS on M3 stock rims. They were really great but take time to warm up. - Brakes seem to be the weakest thing. They were smelling for most of the 1.5 hour drive home. - Stick shift is a bit of a pain because you have to take one hand off the wheel... can't believe I'm saying this but I think that an auto might be quicker and better! - The car is really fun and great on the track once you get the hang of it. It's so happy to be driven hard and gives you real confidence. - Nannies. Tried them on. Then Sport plus for 20 laps. Ultimately I took off everything for my best times. Now I have a real sense of what this car can do. I LOVE IT! I now drive around town with an smile on my face way bigger than when I first picked up the car! https://www.dropbox.com/s/ldnhg2cril...85314.mp4?dl=0

I understand where you are coming from....had a full bolt-on and tuned R58s...always scared passengers with how quick it was.
Haven't been able to get the same reaction with the M2..but when you look at how fast you are actually going it's a heck of a lot faster. Forsure size and weight plays a big role in that! |

Glad you're enjoying the car. With all the rave reviews the M2 received, it's surprisingly a car that I've personally had to allow more time to connect with than others. While it's undoubtedly a great package overall, more seat time, pushing the car to its limits, and some tweaks/mods can make it exceptional.

I also had an R56 JCW. I saw the F56 was going to be bigger and heavier and preferred the R56 look. It was a blast to drive both city and highway. I had lots of plans on how to mod it to make it even better but in the end it would never be the ideal car I had envisioned. And while it was nimble and great at moving through traffic it needed a lot of suspension work and exhibited pretty bad bump steer. I loved how it drove on the highway but the gearing was short and the seat cushions were short and hard after several hours. And the entertaining exhaust became loud and not enjoyable on the highway. Ditto for tire noise. While there are things you can do to fix/improve the Mini in these areas, when I heard about the M2, and like someone else said, it looked like it might be a better execution of a similar theme: small nimble powerful (enough) toy for the road and track. So I bought it. And I'm glad I did. As fun as the Mini was the M2 is better in every measure for me. Better daily, better highway drive, sounds better, looks better, corners better, more comfortable for longer rides, DCT has 7 gears making it nicer for higher speeds when the limit is 80+, Back seat is more usable, trunk is bigger, etc. Besides, I actually bought the MCS at the same time so I still have that to drive when I feel like being a hooligan.

I went through two minis. 2007 Cooper S hardtop that decided to implode at 85k miles. Then a 2013 countryman S that I replaced the suspension with coilovers, etc. Loved them both but realized I DESPISE front wheel drive. The torque steer alone on the 2007 would put you in the next lane. That led to the M2 more then anything... The material quality is way higher as well, too many creaks and rattles in both minis. I do miss the gas mileage though...

We currently have a 2017 M2 as my daily and my daughter’s 2017 Cooper S (our first mini) that I get to drive so often. Other than lack of space, this thing is an instant hoot to drive in the streets. The sad thing is the Cooper S has an adaptive suspension that the M2 lacks. But it will not replace the M2 as it is in a different league in almost all other issues.

This thread should be a lesson in why you shouldn't buy cars or establish a baseline level of enthusiasm based on journalists' reviews (who are given benefits and whose jobs depend on favourable automaker relationships). Buy what speaks to you and is fun to you, which could very well be a slower car, or a less technically competent car.
