The 4 cylinder S14 is not a piece of shit.
The 4 cylinder F20C/F22C1 in the Honda S2000 is not a piece of shit.
Nor is the one currently in the euro Honda Civic Type R.

If Honda really set it's collective engineering mind to it, it could produce a 4 door Acura version of the S2000 (and a luxury coupe version) to go up against the 2 series that probably would blow the doors off of the M235i and even an M2. And they probably would use a turbo 4 to do it.
So, this no need to be an engine snob.
The Porsche 919 uses a V4, and the Jag C-X75 uses a supercharged and turbocharged I4 engine with hybrid system, sounds and goes like stink.

The turbo N18 4 banger in my Mini GP isn't bad either. Of course the car only weighs 2500 lbs.

firstly, i am very very glad the M2 is getting the N55 inline-6. I really did NOT want it to get a 4 banger.

that being said....there are good 4-cylinders out there. They are not as rich or as 'deep' as a 6 in their delivery, but they can be fun. My TT has a good-sized K04 Turbo with twin intercoolers on the 1.8T 225hp variant and after driving my 135is around quite often----i usually get in the TT and it feels like it's going to snap my neck from the force the turbo generates. It doesn't sound as good as the 135is NOR is it really as fast, however it feels punchy and alive and full of energy. A different kind of 'fun'.

History is full of some really great cars with 4-cylinder engines.....so don't be so quick to dismiss them all!

You are happy no I4, me not so much, but for other reasons. Of course an I6 is better, BUT:
  • 3.0l engine is a big engine for Europe, 2.0l engines for Europe are in general a good performing engine. Low performance is mostly everything below 2.0l, like 1.4l or so.
  • From what I got, you want a light car, but with 6 cylinders, not 4. I agree. For cars like Lotus or the Alfa 4C it may be OK, but well, I4 is not special, at least the rest of the car is special.
  • The thing is, displacement is independent of number of cylinders. So why no 2.0l I6 like old BMW 320i for example? That is what made it special compared to its competitors. Now it is the same 2.0l I4 as all other.
  • Cost!!! The same reason we have no small V8 engines.

in regards to the V8....it isn't cost IMO....it's the inability to make fuel efficient V8s. when is the last time you heard of a V8 getting 35mpg (US figure)?? never! carmakers have to meet certain standards across their whole range now and they don't want to lose out on upping their averages on any model these days.

I was planning on getting a F8x but now when I see these spy shots there is no question about it... The next car will be the M2!

i can't think of anything in the next year in this likely price range that is going to be announced that i'd want more than this car.

i just hope there aren't any markups or anything and i can get a semi decent price

who am i kidding, i think i'd buy it at msrp.

i for one will be happy with a tuned n55. but i'd have been happy with less weight and the "S20" mythical i-4 also. the n55 will sound better i'm sure than a tuned n20 (which sounds uh.. meh in my 328), but the weight savings would have been fun too. either would have been great.

I really don't get how people on this forum trash I4's in one breathe, and say the e30 M3 is the best M car ever made in the next.

Hi all. New here. Looking to follow the M2 talk. So far the speculative specs sound great. If it hits around 3,100 lbs it'll be perfect.

Welcome to the forum! 3,100 pounds would be a dream come true! That's not very likely though.

That would be 400 pounds lighter than the M235i. I don't think they will be able to go that far.

My guess is E46 M3 range - 3300-3350 lbs...CF roof, less standard equiopment, and lighter wheels should help a lot

Given the timing of the development cycle, it will be interesting to see if they use some of the additional carbon fiber structural design they are planning for the next 7 series. Probably not.

I would say probably not, unfortunately. The M235i is already developed and that is what they are basing the M2 off of. It would be to difficult to re-engineer the car at this point. But here's to hoping

I'd say, expect similar weight savings measures to the F8x M3/4 and you won't be disappointed. I think dmboone25 is spot on. Ironically, M GmbH is more likely to deliver the weight target they initially boasted for the F82 when they deliver the F87.

To me, this car could bridge the gap between the E46 M3 and the Z4MC - that happy place between totally raw (Z4MC) and a little outdated (E46 M3) in a small coupe with a somewhat usable back seat - or, better yet, like a modern E46 M3. Better tires, brakes, suspension, economy, transmission AND 10% more power?

Where in the hell do I sign ??

They should bring back carbon black
They should bring back CB and many more, because the color choices suck.

I was thinking the same thing....I owned an e30 M3 and it was a dog. Great to look at...but slow and not very exciting...but I would still like to have it in the stable for nostalgic reasons.....
