Brakes squealing and I'm at 6800 miles--can that be right?

Half of the miles are commuter miles, and probably ~1000 of them are fairly hard spirited cruise miles with my car group. Could they really be worn out already?

It's not a matter of them being worn out. You need to bed them in properly. You don't have a good pad trasnfer layer on the disc. When you do get some pad on them during spirited drives, you scrape it off quickly when you're easy on the brakes during your commute. Check out the video below that we made on the topic. After watching you should understand what's going on with your brakes and why.

How to bed-in pads and discs

How cold is it outside? Mine squeal when they're really cold (-15C or more), but once they get up to temp they're fine.
