Did initial NBTs have CIC controllers?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com I noticed that a 2014 6-series I was looking to buy had a slightly different screen display. I did a quick comparison online and it appears it's a NBT system. However, the idrive controller is a CIC controller. Is the system I saw indeed NBT?

Yeah, the earliest versions had the same CIC controller. Controllers with touchpad came like one year later or so.

Can I simply retrofit the touchpad with no coding to gain touch functions?

I think it's a different head unit or something, not just a software update.
