Android - Android Auto topics

Does anybody have any info on Android Auto? I'd hope it should come shortly since there is apple carplay. And does anybody know what the 300 dollars that BMW charges for Apple Carplay gets you? Is it an actual hardware change or just software?

BMW has no plans to add Android Auto for the foreseeable future.

It's a software change.

Right, and this mainly due to privacy concerns, according to a BMW statement.

I hoped that with the new Connected North America app Spotify integration would work but it does not. I have yet to see proper Spotify on the iDrive.

Android Auto App now working with any car

From Google:
Quote:
Android Auto now works with any car! You can connect your phone to a compatible car display, or put your phone in a dock and use Android Auto directly from your phone screen. With a simplified interface, large buttons, and powerful voice actions, Android Auto is designed to make it easier to use apps from your phone while you’re on the road. Navigate with Google Maps, listen to playlists or podcasts from your favorite apps, send messages via voice, and more.

To use Android Auto, you’ll need a phone running Android 5.0 or higher (Lollipop, Marshmallow or Nougat) and an active data connection. You may also need to update some of your existing apps, such as Google Maps, Google Play Music, or Google Search.

• Android Auto now works with any car! Use it directly on your phone screen
• Android Auto on your phone screen can start automatically when connecting to your car's Bluetooth
• Even more compatible apps: http://g.co/androidauto
• Send a customized reply message with a single tap
• Scroll through song lists more easily with the new letter jump feature

Man, Google is seriously deceiving people with this.

Android Auto DOES NOT work with ANY car. It works on your phone, which you can place inside whatever car you want. Not quite the same thing...

They now consider "Android Auto" to also be the phone app, as it has the exact same functionality as the car implementation (plus upgradeable). Phone detect's car's bluetooth and switches interfaces. According to Google, you can say stuff (after the steering wheel button press), like:
"Play my 'Dance!' playlist on Spotify."
"Play Call Me Maybe onb Amazon Music."
"Play house music on Pandora."
"Play Harry Potter on Audible."
"Play Adele Radio on iHeartRadio."
"Play Planet Money on NPR One."

No, it won't show on iDrive screen unless you have BMW's miracast enabled - which is nice. And phone controls must be spoken to be legal in most states. But it really is a useful app.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I think the app is great and this is a super cool idea. I wish Apple would do the same.

But they can't go around advertising that it "works in every car" because a lot of people will expect to just hook it up via USB and have it show up on the screen.

As of 5.0. BMW calls it "screen mirroring". Unfortunately, Google disabled it on the Pixel phone, but it'll work with other Android phones.

???? That makes no sense! It's the flagship phone, go figure.

I do dig the Pixel though, IMO the greatest phone alternative for Apple haters.

It makes sense for Google, because they now have something called "Chromecast" which is a competing screen casting tech. The fact that you can't use Chromecast in a car might have slipped their minds though.

I have yet to see a screen mirroring option on my M2. I've tried to get it coded but to no avail. Anyone else see the option?

I'm feeling quite a bit dumb here. Just took delivery of my M2 yesterday. When listening to audio via bluetooth from my Android phone, I cannot seem to find a way to pause the track. Help!?

^^ Does that pause, or just mute while allowing the track to keep playing (silently)?

It just mutes. Fine for music. Not fine for podcasts or audiobooks. My 2011 golf could do this...

It pauses music, YouTube, podcasts etc on my iPhone, so issue may be android specific.
