I've now put ~900 miles on my M2 and I don't mind the ASD around town. On the interstate, it is a different story -- the drone at 70-75 makes listening to music or having a conversation more strained. Per one of the earlier threads, I pulled fuse 122 as a trial to shut down the audio/ASD. This makes the difference on the interstate. I'm going to trial it a bit more, but it looks like I'm going to go for a bypass harness.

Use BimmerCode to code it off. It's quicker to do, and you get some other custom settings for your car.

After a trip with interstate driving, I ordered the harness since I prefer not to code it out (I did the trial with pulling fuse 122). I was thinking though, with a wiring harness, has anyone come up with a toggle switch to turn the ASD off and on from the trunk? The only time I find it really needs to be off is to cut the drone at 70-75 mph.

Response from Technic PNP:

"A switch at the ASD will also turn off your OEM amp.

Why turn off ASD

I coded ASD off and went for a ride. Sounded positively punny. Stopped and reactivated it.

Personally like the sound inside the cabin.

I went through the same thing. Decided to live with the highway drone.

Prefer it off. After living with it for awhile, I realized that it was masking what the engine was really doing. Cabin sound reduced, but so is drone, and with a DP I can still hear plenty, at least for me.

Much better without the fakery. Drive harder if it sounds "puny".

The droning from ASD is so crap.

I like sound inside the cabin. Don't like fake noise. Now I drive with windows down when possible and listen to the stereo far less. DP and possibly MPE pending...

I ALMOST did the same thing. Installed the harness, went for a drive, and felt a little disappointed at first. Considered pulling it back out, but I'm very glad I haven't. I get why people like it, and I get why people (like me now) don't. Now I enjoy mashing the pedal and really hearing what's happening in front and behind me. I also like that switching modes only changes the performance of the car, not cranking up the volume in the cabin.

Ahh, being shrouded in a fake noise cocoon. Doesn't get any better than that.

To me, ASD is most annoying at lower end of RPM when you tap the pedal just a little bit and get in return a brass-like grunt as if you're really pushing it or something.

It feels like a whore faking her orgasm before you even get in her.

Which in essence, at certain speeds is exactly what it is LOL.

As a 1M owner ASD isn't on the car , however I can understand the idea , there are many times I can't hear the motor the car is too damn quiet with the turbos.

However, fake or Wrong Sound at the wrong times or wrong volume would be annoying as well. The 1M does have a natural drone at 2000-2800 rpm, but it's not unlivable.

Sounds like the answer on both cars, is live with it stock as you can stand it .. but eventually DP and perhaps exhaust is the best remedy

I had ASD off and open flaps. First time I notice my turbo wooosh for a long period while getting in the freeway. Cool!

I was happy with ASD On for my first 2000 km as I was in break in period and wouldn't go over 4000-4500 rpm. I couldn't understand why it sounded so annoying for so many people.

Now as my break in service has been done I do push the throttle pedal down . And I started to feel the amplified sound as too loud and too intrusive. I coded out the ASD off with the BimmerLink App (same developper as BimmerCode). It is very easy and can be turned on and off on the fly so you can really compare the sound with and without ASD for the different driving settings. You can also decide to turn it off for a highway trip for example and bring it back on when riding some twisty roads.
In the end I put the ASD switch off (in the App) and feel I can hear enough of my engine, and that it feels even better than before.

On the drive up to Monticello ~2-3 hours, I had to put it into Comfort to kill the drone around 2K and slight above

So I have a fabspeed catted down pipe and a muffler delete, at certain rpm ranges I hear a slight drone. Deleting ASD could possibly eliminate this?

Coded mine off as well. I don't like FAKE engine noise pumped through the stereo.
