What the heck is going on with this car??

Why is the demand so outrageous?? Why is the car not being produced? Why is BMW choking the market? Why am I seeing 50k over MSRP in California!!??? It was never like this when I bought my first M4 2 years ago. I'm so very confused. I'm thinking of ordering an M2 for EuroDelivery but I'm not seeing this making any sense whatsoever in these conditions. What to do??

I don't think it's that bad... yes supply has been limited but we've known that was going to be all along. Some have said the M2 is more marketing than anything else. A hype machine for both M and MW brand. But cars are being produced, people are getting allocations and dealers are getting cars for stock.

Can't tell you what the big brains at BMW are thinking, but it's working.

I think in the end it's a really good car, and it probably gained a lot more positive press and subsequent demand than BMW planned for.

Because it's being made at one plant alongside other non-M vehicles.

Call around far and wide if you really want the car. After mine was delivered my dealer said they had an immediate allocation for Feb.

Thanks guys. I spoke to my sales rep 2 months ago and he said the waiting list has 20 people on it at BMW of Austin.

+1 on calling. I found a car in 2 days. Like I mentioned, they're coming over...just not in droves.

Try BMW of San Antonio, BMW of El Paso, BMW of Beaumont as they may have one available or coming up shortly.

Bmw of Corpus Christi had an allocation available a few weeks ago. Call around, you'll find one.

My local Charlotte dealer had a list of 17 people last Feb when I wanted to place a deposit. I said eff-that, went a state over and became #3. Got my car with Euro Delivery in Sept 2016 at MSRP. It's possible.

I spent a single afternoon searching and found multiple dealers willing to take orders (delivered in 3-4 months) at MSRP.

It seemed like things were slowing down.

This. All it takes is calling around. I spent 20 minutes calling dealers, then I found one in SoCal with an immediate allocation for 3-4 month delivery. This is less than 2 hrs from the dealer that was asking MSRP+50k!! Just gotta do a bit of legwork

I am #1 of 1 @ BMW of Beaumont. Not sure when I will get an allocation but according to the SA they managed to get 2 cars over last year, so I am hopeful that I will get the car at least this year.

He said he had not heard of an allocation opening for Q1, so I guess earliest will be next quarter?

I placed my name on the waitlist at Classic BMW in Dallas, TX back in July 2016 and was number 75 on the waitlist. I was told to expect to wait about a year and a half to get an allocation. In the meantime, I found an abandoned build at BMW of Dallas and an unclaimed allocation at Jackie Cooper BMW in OKC. I was about to pull the trigger on the unclaimed allocation in OKC when Classic gave me a call letting me know my allocation was ready. I placed my order in the middle of December for February 2017 production at MSRP. Still not sure how the estimate was so way off, but I'm not complaining.

Make sure to distinguish "taking orders" from getting a production slot/allocation with your name on it.

Some dealers will "take orders" and give you happy talk about when they'll actually get allocations that will allow them to fill those orders. Things are loosening up from the beginning, but still be wary about happy talk.

Mokrunka, sounds like the dealer you found is anticipating having an opening for next quarter if they said 3-4 month wait time.

I was told I'm number one and they should get their allocations in january. Everything I have been reading leads me to believe the allocations for April/may/June won't be out until early March. So point is be wary when you are told their is an opening.

Nope, when I went in there on New Years Eve, I placed my order with the SA at the dealer. I have a printout with my production number and am currently tracking it for a Week 7 build

Just got to do a bit of calling around, imho, although if you don't want to buy out of state/region, I can understand it may be a bit difficult to get an allocation.

edit: My post may have misleading, when I said a 3-4 month wait, I meant 3-4 months from order until taking delivery, not production.

Very interesting and very bad news. I talked to my SA in Austin, he's saying a 12-18 month wait on the M2. I told him I wanted Euro and Individual, he said it made no difference... Gonna call BMW of Tyler next.

The waitlist at Autobahn BMW in Ft Worth was moving pretty quickly and they are a stand-up, family-owned dealership. Been getting ~ 3 allocations/quarter looks like. Ask for Dennis if you call.

Other dealers to consider include BMW of El Paso, San Antonio and Corpus Christie.

I took a look at the specs of my M4 and the specs of the M2 and I'm gonna keep my car.
