Debating this!
The wrapped caps turned out ok, and I'm not a big fan of the winged mirrors. No CF on the exterior right now, so I may go with black caps in the spring. No rush on that to me.
Appreciate all the thoughts and input. I like the paint protection, but I did this for the looks. I love having a one-off, but not something that stands out too much. Lots of thumbs ups from car guys on the road, but lots of ho-hum from general public. Perfect for me. Anxious to post pics of the finished product soon. All my Midwest friends be safe in the ice this weekend!

The one thing that strikes me is that people are overlooking the potential to custom color the M2s with wraps. Everyone bemoans the limited color palette, yet people are all circling around the concept of wrapping the existing colors in clear (matte). For the same (or equivalent) money, pick your color...right?

I'm still waiting for the 4-door and will consider wrapping as an investment since it might be the last car I buy. (Sad but true).

I've used PPF on all my cars since 2002. I'm a big fan of it. In New England I think it's a must have to give your car a fighting chance.

However, folks should be aware that the film is not bullet proof. Impacts by small rocks can and do damage the film. As long as the paint is OK, the film has done its job. Also, over time the film ages like anything else much less so if at all for a garage queen.

I have Xpel on my 4 currently. Great product.

I'm curious if the colored wraps have the same properties as the xpel ultimate? I'm not even sure if the stealth xpel has the same properties.

With that said, some folks have opted for a colored wrap....

Honest question, just never heard of it - what is a stealth wrap? Is that the matte-esque finish?

Looks good by the way...you ever consider a CF or gloss black wrap for the roof?

Colored film does not protect like Xpel. What some people do believe it or not, is put Xpel over the color film.

Stealth Xpel protects like regular Xpel. Looked at a blue GT4 last night at the NE Auto show in matte Xpel. Looked nice. Cost was 8k.

Aha, mistaken. I thought the XPEL stuff came in colored versions. looks like a 3M product would be needed for a color change.

Also, if you go to the expel site, the materials alone are ~$5k, so there are no "bargain" DIY solutions.

Looks great but I'm not a fan of the value proposition of PPF. I'm a fan of the respraying approach. Actually I just resprayed the nose (bumper cover, hood, fenders) of my 335i after 60k miles of all-weather driving. Even using the absolute best shop I know; the work didn't cost $2000.
As for $5k for a temporary wrap... Isn't it $5k for custom Individual paint from the factory (when available)?

XPEL STEALTH has same properties as the ULTIMATE clear film. 10 year warranty. Self-healing and 8.5mil thick.

Vinyl is 2-4 mil thick (colored wraps)

The info is on the XPEL website

Seems legit.

+1

99 percent of the wraps look like an unfinished paint job. I'd understand a clear wrap but not this Batmobile fad. Hell I've seen Bentley like this. It's time for this fad to die.

Hey for what it's worth my shop is a certified Xpel installer and we also do complete wraps (with colored vinyl, etc). This is not an advertisement to be clear. First, xpel is paint protection, it's clear (or matte) and let's the original color show through (that's why he didn't "wrap" his reflectors). Newer wrap vinyls are so thin they do not provide the same paint protection as xpel or even older vinyl. The new stuff installs much more quickly and the finish is amazing, if you want to change the color of your car, it's never been easier or as cost effective (M2 would cost about $2,400 installed). However, we still recommend installing xpel over the vinyl on the front clip and behind the wheels to protect the vinyl, especially if your car will see any track time. any cars that will see track time. Our business was created to do race cars and we transitioned over time to street.

My points; xpel is great for protecting paint, this car looks killer with the stealth film, wrapping to change color is a completely different matter, and who cares how much other people spend on their mods or what the mods are, that's what makes this hobby / obsession so cool.

Enjoy driving.

10 years is far from a "temporary" solution.
