The Michelin PIlot super Sport ( aka PSS) came out in 2011 the year the 1M came out.

It was a revision of the prior tire - the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 which was the OE tire on the 1M and had been a top tire.

The 1M was going to come with the PSS but it was done testing prior to the new tire being fully developed. Immediately , owners began replacing the OE tire with the PSS which has far better traction especially for the rear, and also costs less as well.

If it's any consolation, had you gotten PSS's and you were planning on tracking your car, my past experience with PSS's tells me you would have worn down the front shoulders in no time so those PSS's would only have been a short term proposition anyway.

The beauty about high performance rubber in general is they have no tread life, so if you don't like them, a new set is just around the corner!

Just be grateful that you have your car, and are not among the poor souls like myself who are still waiting for an allocation

That's a camber problem which will kill any tire. The PSS is pretty durable.

Yes, it is a camber problem... the thing is I maxed out my front negative camber to -2.5 deg on my 135i (with camber plates), and the PSS's shoulders were still wearing very quickly. I tried 2 sets of PSSs and the same thing happened. Then I switched to Dunlop Star Specs and the problem went away. I have been running Star Specs ever since. Don't get me wrong, the PSS's are excellent tires, but for track use they are more sensitive to insufficient camber than some other tires out there.

Tweet by Michelin about the Pilot Super Sport tires sporting the BMW M2 (Oct 14, 2015):

Interview by CAR magazine with BMW M2 project manager Frank Isenberg (BMW M) about the BMW M2 (December 16, 2015):
(source: http://www.carmagazine.co.uk/feature...-january-2016/)
"That chunkier body – 55mm wider front, 80mm rear – is essential to cover a wider track courtesy of M4 forged aluminium suspension components. ‘The track is the same, but the M4 tyres wouldn’t fit, so the tyres are 10mm narrower,’ says Isenberg. The Michelin Pilot Super Sports measure 245/35 ZR19 front, 265/35 ZR19 rear."

As indicated above, the M2 press release of October 2015 featured the phrase:
  • "Zusammen mit den exklusiven „Michelin Pilot Super Sport“-19-Zoll-Reifen" (see for example here (p. 12))
  • "Together with the exclusive 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres" (see for example here (p. 11) or here (p. 6))
In February 2016 BMW released an updated version of the M2 press release in five languages: German (see here), English, French, Spanish and Italian (see here).

In all five texts of this updated version (which no longer contains an express 'closed deck' reference and also modified some data regarding the BMW 2002 and BMW E30 M3), the express PSS reference was replaced by:
  • "Zusammen mit den 19-Zoll-Reifen" (see for example here (p. 12))
  • "Together with the 19-inch tyres" (see for example here (p. 11))

I called BMW Genius today since my car's status changed to "Production Ends" over the weekend. While talking to him I asked about the tires. He could not tell on his end which tires were put on the car. One more thing to worry about.

-2.5 is still a bit low for a BMW, I prefer -3 or more. Star Specs are primarily a track street tire and don't do other things as well as MPSS like have low road noise, drive well in the wet and last more than 10,000 miles.

I've tried MPSS on 3 different cars on track and have had no issues with severe wear or delamination.

I had the impression that after over two years and almost 25K kms (Summer tires) with my 1M the PS2 tire compound slightly started to 'glaze' to some extent (hardened rubber - less supple). But I could be wrong - could be just due to normal wear 'n tear. Later, back in the day, I replaced the PS2 tires with PSS and experienced better grip.

Mine came with MPSS but don't sweat it if you get the conti's. 3 or 4 track days and you'll need to replace the tires anyway and you can put whatever you want on there. I've got 2 track days and 4000 miles on my MPSS. Going to Road America for 2 days this weekend and fully expect I'll be ordering new tires next week.

OK then, why also are the tires size for the 2017, 255 and 275 for the BMW m2.
I saw this at bmw site. Why what gives, better grip, better 0-60?

BMW site lists 245/265 and that is what is on my car.

I contemplated bringing this up to my CA when the car gets back home but it's honestly not worth it. This is my DD so at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. If they have less grip the car will simply be more tail happy. If they get noisy I'll burn some rubber and order MPSS.

Not sure if they "glazed" or if the softer compound wore off and left you with the harder under compound.

I have a similar experience w/performance tires. They start to loose grip at 22K-25K. I noticed it more when the car was a DD and driving in the rain or wet roads.

I have had problems in the past with the outer edge chunking, feathering, etc. I just kept driving until I wore the tread smooth

I can't achieve -3 with the non-adjustable camber plates I have... maybe that is the magic number that will allow the PSSs to better endure heavy track use. I agree PSSs are better in the 3 respects you mention above, but on the track the Dunlops are superior. I'm still searching for the ideal street and track tire... there may be no such thing, but owning three sets of wheels (including winter wheels) is not an option for me.

Just got back from PCD today and I have PSS on my MY2017. All of the PC cars have Conti tires since they have a deal going with Conti. BMW started sourcing the contisport contact 3's because Michelin was shorting them PSS. Was not impressed with the Conti 3's on the PC M2s...glad Conti is discontinuing those. Also heard the PSS are being phased out soon for revision as well.

I wonder if by " shorting them " .. What really happened is the folks at BMW said .. We want to increase our order a little bit ... This M2 seems to be a hit .. And Michelin said ..

??Why would we sell more of them to you when we will sell them in the aftermarket ??

Doesn't matter ... Sounds like both of these tires have new replacements coming ..

Thanks for the info !

Tires are temporary!
