Have BMW update the software to the latest ILEVEL 3.60.1 I did this and the Backlights seem to be brighter now.

Also noticed the sound system is louder too. They pushed an update to the AMP
But still no light-up dashboard during the day.

My dealership wont do an update unless something is wrong.
Was something wrong with your car?

After a number of times in daytime when I really need to know the exact speed and having the analogue speedo being unreadable and the digital readout being too small, I decided enough was enough.

I found a small, cheap ($40) HUD on eBay and mounted it via the OBD2 port and easily routed the cables to the unit on the dash. It has limited functions, showing just speed, revs, voltage and temperature but it works great in bright daylight or at night. Only downside is the reflective film patch you can see from outside the car.

Another (third) change of part numbers for the cluster, 11/16.

62 10 8 053 079 - up to 7/16
62 10 8 074 051 - 7/16-11/16
62 10 8 089 845 - from 11/16

These are ECE parts, but same applies to mph clusters.

Just bumping up the thread.. Has anyone found a solution to the dim cluster issue?

Do recent 2017 MY owners experience the same problem?

Maybe someone had replaced their dim cluster with the updated version (62 10 8 089 845 - from 11/16 as per swagon )?

I have a 2017 and, while the cluster is not as bright as it was in my 135i, the speed is still readable. We've had pretty gloomy weather here for the past couple of weeks so I've had plenty of time driving in dim conditions. I've not yet felt I was in a state where I could not accurately gauge my speed.

My 2017 (week 48 build) dash is easy to read, but I always drive with the headlights or running lights on.

Just bumping this thread.

Can more MY2017ers chime in about this?

Also wondering if MY2018 LCI will have this issue resolved for good?

Cheers.

MY17 - can't see s*** in overcast conditions.

I've pulled the Australian Design Rules (ADR) to hopefully fined something to defect the car and force BMW to fix.

I think the biggest problem is not so much the lack of back lighting, but that the speedometer and tachometer have mid gray lettering on a black background. If they had made the lettering white it would've made all the difference in the world.

I 'remedied' this by installing the P3 gauge (occupying only the upper air vent at the window side). Speed permanently displayed in big orange/amber figures (softer contrast in the dark - brighter contrast during daylight). OBC on my instrument cluster: Speed Limit Info + SATNAV in one screen.

1.) I'd have to agree with this; either BMW does the right thing and redesign the instruments, recall all M2's to have the new cluster fitted (under warranty), or IND comes out with a cluster with better readability that we'd have to pay for and get done.

2.) Is this just an M2 issue or do M3/4's have readability issues as well?

M2 only. Light grey on dark grey + a lazy lighting sensor = trouble in overcast lighting conditions.

Remedy: the M2 CS is rumored to get a digital instrument cluster (either stock or as an option).

Source? First I've heard of this and would definitely be welcomed.

Someone managed to have a quick peek inside a parked M2 CS test mule at BMW HQ in Garching. Apart from a manual transmission, he also noticed a digital speedometer inside a heavily camouflaged dashboard (see here).

Who's the genius who gave the green light on light grey on dark grey instrumentation?
