2017 M2
Week 35 Build
Pickup: 10/24/16
Tires: Conti

Talked to my dealer here in the Minneapolis area (BMW of Minnetonka) about the situation & my surprise to see the Conti's on my delivered M2. He brought it to the attention of the General Manager who was upset that BMW would do this sort of thing on an M car. So the GM apparently raised the issue with BMWNA to learn more about it.

MY17 does not get MPSS exclusively. You can see this by comparing the promo material for the two years:

MY16 states "MPSS"

MY17 states "high performance tires"

So while it sucks, they are under no obligation to swap them out.

Plenty of M cars in the past have come with Conti's. Your GM must not be very familiar with M cars.

Don't worry, these tires don't last long - you can switch to the new Michelin's soon enough. That's what I did with my e92 M3. Contis to MPSS.

I had conti sport 3's on my S4. they were a good tire. My M2 arrived yesterday and it seems i'm one of the 'lucky' ones as it has super sports

Seems the reason for the switch isn't really capacity constraint. Michelin is just phasing out the PSS in favor of the PS4S, so they'll become increasingly rare as the final inventory is drawn down.
The M2 press release of October 2015 featured the phrase:
  • "Zusammen mit den exklusiven „Michelin Pilot Super Sport“-19-Zoll-Reifen" (see for example here (p. 12))
  • "Together with the exclusive 19-inch Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres" (see for example here (p. 11) or here (p. 6))
In February 2016 BMW released an updated version of the M2 press release in five languages: German (see here), English, French, Spanish and Italian (see here).

In all five texts of this updated version (which no longer contains an express 'closed deck' reference and also modified some data regarding the BMW 2002 and BMW E30 M3), the express PSS reference was replaced by:
  • "Zusammen mit den 19-Zoll-Reifen" (see for example here (p. 12))
  • "Together with the 19-inch tyres" (see for example here (p. 11))

Mine came with Contis too. At this time (1200 miles) they seem fine, no issues but obviously I do not have a side by side comparison. So for now it's not the end of the world if your car comes with these instead of PSS tires. Time will tell.

Just took delivery this past Saturday of my week 43 M2. It came with Conti's. Although I am disappointed to not receive the Michelins, I do not really think that it will really matter much to me since I will rarely push the car close to its limits and I do not plan to track the car.

My first M2 (early Sept build) came with PSS. My 2nd M2 (passed on the first), late nov build, came with Conti.

That's what I get for waiting.

The tirerack reviews have my very concerned - they tend to be pretty close to accurate and with the Conti's at #20 out of 30 and the PSS #1 out of 30s, I really wish I had gotten the PSS.

I'm pretty sure that your car is going to self destruct precisely at 7431 miles, simply because of the fact that it has Continentals on it ... I'm so sorry for your loss. .. :

Lol. Yes you are completely correct. The tires are fine and they don't appreciably change your ownership experience.

The beauty about high performance rubber in general is they have no tread life, so if you don't like them, a new set is just around the corner!

Just be grateful that you have your car, and are not among the poor souls like myself who are still waiting for an allocation
I can attest to the fact the the MPSS tires are fabulous on the street. While they also feel great on the track, they wear through the shoulders on the track in no time. Get track tires on a square setup and you'll be better off all around.

Camber plates are a neccesory for track use on the 1M and I don't anticipate the M2 being much different. I was killing track tires the same way. Even buying used takeoffs was frustrating because I was having to flip them on the rims because they were wearing so quickly on the outside edge only.

For track duty I switched to a square setup with Hankook RS3's. I don't have camber plates and I don't get the severe edge wear that I was getting with the MPSS's. The Hankook's have a stiffer sidewall and they don't roll over as much.

Contis...oh well.

Unrelated issue.
I got MY17 and it came with 265s.
Thought 275s were coming on the MY17.
Just trying to figure out my impending tire order.

No, just some bad info that came out a while back. The tire size never changed.

edit: The BMW folks I talked to said the tire size was a very specific choice.
