M Performance Carbon Winglets Installation Question

Hey fellow M2 owners.

I have ordered the MPerformance carbon side and front winglets. (http://ind-distribution.com/ind/bran...ar-winglet-set) They come with plastic clips. I think there's 5 clips per side. They also come with pre-applied double sided tape.

On the car there is no holes for these clips to go into, but on the winglets there are 5 holes.

Does fitting these require drilling into the car or is the tape sufficient? For people who've had these dealer fitted, do they use the 5 clips in addition to the double sided tape?

Does anyone have a photo of the underside of the carbon winglet to show how they clip in?

Thanks

Don't know for sure, I didn't do the Winglets. That said, I did do the M2 spoiler. It was installed with only the tape.... if that helps to answer your question.

Anyone figure out yet if those 5 tabs are necessary? I don't read or speak German, that link is useless.

It does show you need to drill some holes and use the supplied rivets. A quick google translate will provide further detail if still required.

I was hoping someone with these side winglets could say if they've been okay without using the rivets. They seem kinda useless anyway, and I'd prefer not drilling..

*Edit* Google translate doesn't seem to work on a .pdf, at least not on my computer.

I know what you mean about drilling into your car, but if it were me I would not trust just the tape, if they provide rivets, I bet you need to use them or one day you will discover that you are missing one of those expensive winglets.

Was able to get google translate to work..but that .pdf is just awful, I didn't end up using the instructions at all. Luckily it's really straightforward, no need to mark the holes or anything. Just use all the bolts that are already on the car to initially attach it, then drill the holes, and pop up in the rivets. Except the rivets are garbage, and I found much easier and more solid push tabs at O'Reillys for a few bucks. All in all, a pretty easy install once I realized the supplied rivets just weren't going to work.

I just bought some 1/4" push tabs in the store, not sure where they would be online. But literally any 1/4" push tab will work 10x better than the rivets BMW supplied.

That's essentially what the instructions say

Just curious, did you pull on the winglets a bit to ensure you have a solid mounting with the push tabs? At 80 MPH or so the slipstream will be pulling on them. Are they the plastic type with expanding legs when the pin is pushed in?

I did tug on them a little before driving, they felt super solid. I've already hit 120 mph with the winglets on, no issues so far. The push pins I used were the plastic type that expanded, pretty sure that's how most push pins work. The ones I used were basically the same as the ones BMW used for the OEM rear diffuser.

Is it the side blade that needs drilling or the actual car?!

The actual car is drilled into several times for the side and front winglets.

The lower side skirts are plastic so you drill into that?

Do you line up the winglet and drill through that to create the holes?

I installed the winglets with tape and the pre existing bolts, then the next day I drilled the holes and put in the push tabs I bought. You really can't mess up with the drilling, only downside is you can't take it off later.

I read German, it says you have to "Drill" the 5 holes with 6mm drill bit.

Reviving this thread with a new question:

Does anyone know if self-tapping screws would suffice instead of the rivets or push tabs?
