My first winter(ish) drive

So having the car since May ive been lucky enough to enjoy the car through summer and getting to some tracks has allowed me to get somewhat a feel of the car. This is my first BMW although have had RWD before but mid engined stuff from Stuttgart.

So waking up to this.....i thought, 'oh this should be interesting'

and prove it really was that cold

so what was it like...so cards on the table im a child so i drive in secret exhaust mode all the time....and so i set off as normal.

Ill just point out although i am a child in terms of noise and burbles i do accept i am not on a track, so speeds are all legal. First roundabout she started to slide, get to the next straight she starts to slide. The hero in me at this point checked out and the car is back in comfort mode. LOL

This had to be the most entertaining drive ive ever had to work and best bit was the car was predictable once you realise you have zero grip and even straights will bite back.

I have never had winter tyres on any of my cars before but im seriously considering them now (ill have a look in the sub forum to see what people recommend).

I have to say im so glad i did buy this car, it always makes me smile even when shes trying to kill me, What a car, i love it.

Becareful out there and I can tell you summer tyres def dont work all year round.

For the love of God, install winter tires now. You're going to kill someone driving on summers in those conditions.

If there's a hint of snow on the ground, you're not going anywhere. PSS are absolutely useless in snow. Like you said, driving on flat, freezing ground that's dry is "doable" but not with precipitation involved.

As far as winter tires are concerned: http://f87.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1311214

When I was on the 350z forum, after the initial rollout in 2008, there was a rash of "I spun my car and crashed" threads during the first winter . Lots of people new to RWD, performance tires, and ice, snow, or even just cold temperatures.

I hope that doesn't get repeated here.

As long as there is no snow/ice on the roads he is good to go with the PSS tyres, they are alright atm overhere. We had -6 Celsius a few days ago, no worries. Grip/braking:Excellent. But I'm getting wintertyres for the snow that's not going to fall eventually. Global Confusion

Cheers

I also had my first run in with winter these past 2 days - we got 45cm of snow between Wed/Thurs.

Winter set for the M2 so far has been great, loving the Alpin4's.

For us non-metric folks, that's almost 18". Are the "high performance" Alpin's sufficient in those depths? I went with the X Ice 3's which are designed for heavy snow, better safe than sorry.

Well, no. No miracle is getting an M2 to drive on 18" of snow. The roads did get plowed early in the morning, so deepest I got was maybe 6" or so, and it was fine.

I've had (and currently have a car with) the X-Ice 3's and honestly I like the Alpins better, I found they stop a few feet earlier.

I'm not sure what option package(s) they offered for the M2 in the U.K., but hopefully you got the heated seats and steering wheel as I did. I decided to keep my 328i (all seasons, relatively mild winters here) and use it in the winter, garaging the M2 for the three winter months (insurance company gave me a discount). At a minimum, winter tires and wheels would be $1,400+.

No way, no chance. Those tires may warm up, but initially you could easily take a turn and understeer yourself right into a curb.

Grip is NOT excellent. I was out in in mid-October with <50F and I could feel the rear start to come around with normal driving.

Do not use summer tires in cold weather. Period.

I am really surprised how many of you are driving in any snow. I work from home when it snows. b/c I'm more worried about people sliding into me or the slush ruts freezing and taking out the front bumper.

No kidding. I wouldn't dare have the balls to use summers in < 40°. The sticky PSS morph into slippery PSS when the temperature plummets.

Its been -3 to -8 the past week or so and I have to say coming from an Audi S4 with winter tires to the M2 with xice3's it certainly is a very noticeable difference. The roads are dryish and I get wheel spin in 4th gear if I ask too much from my shift from 3rd. Braking has been excellent on the ice and around corners although you definitely cant punch it around or it will start to slide out on you. If you actually want to slide it's still not very fun as the traction control kicks in and stops you. the only option you have is turning it off and in icy conditions that's probably not smart. I think sport+ from what I've heard lets you drift a bit without turning everything off so I will try that next. With all that said above my conclusion is still this is the best car I've ever driven period and it's so much fun. I had to put the xice3's on the day it was delivered so needless to say I can't wait until spring and see what this thing can do with actual grip.

Same scenario here. X ice 3 the day I take delivery. The sexy summer wheel tire combination will have to wait. But, I am so looking forward to a RWD sports car with winter tires that I'm able to exploit with, in my humble opinion, above average driving skills in the winter elements.

I had a 2004 WRX with top notch Blizzaks and it was almost too easy. Fun but again, perhaps almost too easy.
