This was my 30th bday gift to myself. Not quite old enough to claim midlife crisis but after driving generic cars the last 5 years since my RX8 In my early 20s decided it was time.

PCD next Tuesday. Finally decided on a plate, "SONIC". Figured blue+nimble and fast with a little throw back to my youth

Yeah, I'm sure that's what he meant. I guess I just disagree with needing to pay cash. I'd rather keep my own cash freed up to make money somewhere else; with car loan rates as low as they are, I can easily make better than 2.9% per year in a mutual fund or similar rather than 'loaning it' to BMWFS.

Cash invested makes 5-7%. Why dump it into a car?

I didn't say pay cash I said you should be able to pay cash. My car is financed at .9 with BMW. Free money.

He is not saying that you should pay all cash for it. He's rather saying that if you don't have enough money in your bank account to pay all cash, you probably can't afford this car regardless you can afford the monthly finance payments or not. There are a lot of people who think they can afford a car just because they can afford the finance payments but without having any significant amount of cash in their bank account.

Exactly. And that is why we have things like gap insurance.

When I got out of school and got my first big kid job, the first thing I did was buy a 93 MR2 Turbo. Sweet car for a 21 year old. $400/ month car payment. 100% financed. All was well till it blew a head gasket and I didn't have the $1,000 in the bank to fix it. Yeah, I could swing the monthly, but I sure as shit couldn't afford that car. Traded it in for a high mileage 89 Tercel. Took a big hit in the wallet and an even bigger hit to the ego but damned if I didnt learn a solid lesson about the difference between being able to afford the monthly vs. being able to afford the car.
