I currently have a 2011 E92 M3 with just about 50,000 original miles. It's my daily driver during warm weather and I absolutely love the car. I have been considering going to a new M3/M4 but to be honest I wasn't impressed enough when I took a test drive to make the plunge.

A friend of mine has decided to get the M2 (he is coming from a M235i xdrive) and I am thinking of doing the same. I called the dealer today and he said they will get an allocation for me in a couple weeks if I decide to go ahead.

Who on the forum has gone from an e92 m3 to the m2, what has your experience been, and how does the m2 compare to your previous car? Also, why have people gone with the m2 over the m3/4 (besides cost). The reviews I have read online and watched on YouTube have really been amazing when it comes to this car. I am seriously thinking about making a move .....

I can help you in about a weeks time. Had an e92 as a daily driver for 4.5 years in all weather in NYC. My M2 comes in on the 19th

Made the move earlier in the year. I miss the steering and noise of the E92... but the M2 is better in every aspect.

The sound is great (not just for a turbo, but I miss the extra 1500rpm) and the handling is as raw as a modem car could be (well weighted steering and well balanced ride).

It's not a go-kart and nor is it a muscle car, but it sits nicely in the middle.

My old E92 M3:

My new F87 M2:

Aside from the S65 revving to 8K (oh, the sound!) there's nothing I like more about the M3. The M2 has it beat in every way.

How does the interior of the m2 compare to the e92 m3?

I've just pulled the trigger on this swap after five years of e92 M3 ownership. The M4 just never clicked for me, the drive isn't great and the sound is poor, in my opinion.

I'll miss the epic V8 sound, I have an exhaust mod, but I've resolved this with myself.

My M2 turns up in Jan.

Steering and noise both fairly significant when it comes to driving enjoyment.

M3 has a better sound and high revving motor but the lack of torque sucks for a street car/daily driver and the M2 fixes that. If you had a e90 you'd miss the extra space and room but thats not the case it seems.

E92 interior uses nicer materials but the layout, menus and buttons are now dated a bit.

True.

I miss the steering as it was hydraulic. I even prefer the 997 gt3 to a 991 in that respect.

Similarly I miss the sheer noise of the engine- any engine that revs that far is special.

Is the steering (in the e92) better than the M2? Borderline. The M2 is an excellent electric setup, but it doesn't load up like the e92. If I wanted the best steering I'd be in an e36 or e30.

Is the engine (in the e92) better than the M2? From a noise perspective, yes. From a driveability perspective, no. It's not that the M2 doesn't sound great (it sounds fantastic)- I just miss a high revving engine.

Would I have chosen an e92 over the M2? No. the M2 is a better car. The chassis, suspension, diff, brakes and interior are significantly better.

I'm about 99% sure I'm going to make the plunge and order the M3. I've taken the M3 and M4 for a test drive and it wasn't good enough for me to make the switch and all the reviews I have read about the M2 have been stellar. Most like it better than the M4. The M2 will be my warm weather/fun car and I tend to keep cars 5+ years. My dealer has allocation for one now but I'm going to wait until nov/December to order so it will be delivered in the spring. I have never seen or driven the M2. First time I will ever buy a car sight unseen ..... that does make me a bit nervous.

I could see most of your points as valid. Two exceptions.
1/2 series interior is nowhere near as special as that in e9x m3.
I have made a switch from m3 to 235i so I know. Materials are of a lower grade throughout.
Engine, aside from not producing pretty much any noise (what you hear in the cabin is an exhaust and some fakery from the speakers), it also also feels fairly common and a bit boring in its power delivery. With m3 you had to work much harder to extract the power, but the whole experience of doing that was different than driving any other car in this price range. I am not knocking down m2, still an awesome car, but "feeling" special or expensive is not its strong side.

Geez, that has NOTHING to do with this thread, and is a completely subjective opinion....YOUR personal taste will never have anything to do with MY car...Maybe I should find your Car Pics and crap on everything I personally dont like? Actually thats pointless and idiotic like trying to change the music you listen to or your favorite color ...

And btw. I get more compliments on them then anything else, and they were bought as a kit and stuck with an adhesive...I usually buy a new set when going to a show and bc they get so dirty, leave them off all other times...

But back on topic "cosmosMpower" post up some of your e92 M3 pics and your opinion on the switch, since (Just a simple reminder) thats what this thread is about...

Sorry to the OP, had to just get that off my chest

Sorry to OP for thread jack.

Gents, a forum is all about sharing opinions. If you don't like someone else's, just ignore it and move on. No need to argue over matters of taste. We all like different stuff. Makes the world go 'round

Difference in Gearbox

A buddy of mine has a manual E92 M3, as you do OP. The manual gearbox in the M2 has rev matching, which blips for you when you downshift. As you know, on the e92, you have to control that yourself. So if you plan on getting a manual M2, this is important to know ahead of time.

Manual e92 m3 had about the worst tranny on the planet. Clutch way too light, rubbery shift lever, and it would grind into 2nd gear regularly. While it revved very high, it always felt ragged to me at high rpm. I had mine a little over a year. Comp package and all. Went back to a Porsche. Now looking to go back to BMW. The m2 is a great value and the torque makes it a much better daily. Just more fun under 40mph. The clutch is a bit heavier (although still very light) and the shifter is much better. The dct may still be a better choice, but at least the manual is decent.

I couldn't make the leap...maybe down the road. It's not easy to give up the character of the e92 with that beautiful S65 heart. The M2 would be a little bit of a down grade for me. I was all on board initially but as more and more was revealed about the M2, I wasn't impressed enough to give up the e92. If the M2 was released with the full compliment of M, interior, CF roof, individual M setting programability, bespoke engine, mirrors, ect... I'm one of the guys that would've been glad to pay the premium for such a car. It's a great car for the price, it'll just take a little more for me to give up the awesome e92.

I think my M2 clutch is lighter than the (e92) M3.

Otherwise I agree with you on the shift quality- the M2 is leagues better!
