Why do some of you want the S55 engine? It sounds like crap and I've heard that it's power delivery isn't as nice as the M2-tuned N55.

The N55 in the M2 pulls all the way to the red line but the S55 is said to lose it 1000 rpm before the red line.

The N55 also got some torque spikes which makes it harder to keep control of the car and also more difficult getting the power into the ground.

Third disadvantage with the S55 is that the N55 in the M2 has less turbo lag.

So yes, the N55 is slower and not as powerful but it sounds better, delivers the power better and has less turbo lag.

But then again. I shouldn't speak too much about this because I haven't actually driven an M4. Just watched some youtube clips...

Well, I have driven an M4 and I can assure you, the S55 pulls like h3ll from 6000-7500 or where the limiter is. The N55 in M2 doesn't do that.

I love when people are scared of water/ meth inj, or tell me its not safe combined with nitrous or high boost...lets you know straight off, they dont have any understanding of how any of they work or why we use them....

My fav is "I don't want flammable resevoir in trunk or under hood", when obv -20 antifreeze is 50/50 water meth and not flammable at 50/50 mix lol....

But sorry

Weight savings, one thing worthit imo. Seats. I have super high quality replica Bride seats...FIA approved...$1000 / pair and identical to the real thing, even bride stamped into plastic harness guides...alone they shipped at 32lbs for 2. pluss side mount brackets (aluminum planted brand side mounts) sparco sliders, and VAC F23 Floor brackets each seat is maybe 20-25lbs....Plan on only running one seat with no sliders at track. That should save about 70lbs. back seat top and bottom ive removed, weight maybe 20lbs tops....for raceday, a smaller high performance battery could save 20lbs+...so right there your talking almost 150lbs....lightweight wheels. My FF-103 shipped at 19lbs each for rear, 17.5lbs front.....widen wheelbase with low offsets and save prob 5-10lbs per wheel...so 20-40 lbs depending...and lastly if you reallly want to be extreme, remove gas tank...13.3 galons but big plastic and heavy im guessing, and put aluminum 10 gal fuel cell in trunk.

All in all thats prob close to 300lbs out...bringing car with driver to 3200-3300lbs

I'm the opposite. Not sure why so much hate on the S55 seemingly so often just because of an exhaust. It's a beast of an engine. I'd take the extra power even though I think the tuned up N55 is plenty for this car and most importantly I wouldn't pay much more for an S55 because #cheap.

For a back to back dyno comparison: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1249883

It shows what you mean about "losing steam" up top just because the power does dip a tiny bit more up top, but it's still making a ton more than the N55 so I doubt it feels like it. I don't think most M3/4 drivers complain about lack of power tbh and besides there are plenty of easy/quick/cheap tunes if you want more. It depends what you want though. The N55 gives the M2 a very nicely balanced and easier to drive power delivery, the S55 would make it a beast, but certainly a different feel to the car. Maybe more like the 1/M.

I think that it has been generally agreed that the N55 has reached it's maximum safe tuning potential (at least from a manufacturer stand point). So IF a special edition M2 is going to be made and get a power bump, what options do they have?

I'd love for it to get the S55. I'm not worried about the sound.

A client of mine has one. It''s a blast.

About weight savings. Don't go the 'let go off DCT and get the manual' way, I love manuals don't get me wrong(not kidding) , this is 2016 almost coming to an end and even if we say we don't, laptimes etc. are more important than we think and marketingwise they do their thing.

I thought the M2 already has >30lbs less sound isolating stuff than M235i?

BMW(M) always was about compromise, even the magnificent E46CSL had a 'modern' SMG box, but still was usable as a daily. It's not Caterham/Radical or something like that.

Even CS/L/GTS whatever it's called will be a 'daily drivable car'.

Cheers
Robin
Excellent thoughts here. I hadn't considered it that way. I guess if it follows suit and is to be more of a baby M4 GTS and carries the name M2 GTS, then yes the DCT box makes sense. It would after all be Motorsports best, fastest M2 possible.

If it goes they way of the CS/CSL where it is less of a track car and more of a 'drivers car' then I think I'd still go for the manual transmission.

I know this thread has evolved a little, so sorry to hijack...but where does everyone think they will plan to end up on price? Couple considerations on this point:

M4: Average MSRP $75K USD
M2: Average MSRP $55K USD
M4 GTS: MSRP $135K USD

Obviously the possible additions (or added lightness) determine the price point as well. Meaning there wouldn't be a CF roof, trunk, hood, driveshaft, seats, door cards, the S55 with water injection, wider track, carbon ceramic brakes, roll cage, wing, etc, etc for $70k USD.

Can they step on the M4's toes? Would people pay more for special edition M2 than an average equipped M4? I guess the production volume must also be considered in this equation.

Without knowing any of these factors it is pointless to try and guess. On the outset however, I don't know that I'd be willing to pay Cayman GT4 prices for an M2 unless its both limited production and has most all of the goodies!
