The wording is so vague. It would be nice if it only affected a subset and not all cars between those dates...so that there's some hope my car gets delivered as scheduled next week
They might not know which cars are affected at this point so they are stopping all and will sort it out as they go. Hopefully that's the case and some of you guys will be getting yours soon.!!!!

I hope so. The memo seems pretty specific about the number (202) of cars affected, and across all the listed models....so hopefully it is a small number of M2 cars

I think it went down like this...the diff manufacturer contacted BMW telling them they fucked up (wrong material, gage out of calibration, out of spec) a certain lot of diffs, qty 202, used in some of their M cars. Just to make sure one doesn't slip through the cracks they put a stop delivery on all M''s manufactured during that time. If they had multiple lots sitting on the shelves waiting for assembly then some cars will have the defective diffs, some won't. They should at least get which ones are good or not sorted out fast. Good luck!

Dang, I feel bad now. I asked my CA if it really was a recall or they just wanted to keep my car in the showroom longer

Don't feel too bad. If his wording was "updating the differential", then he earned your suspicion. It's called "replacing the differential". That is logical and makes sense. His attempt to make it sound "less bad" is why your BS detector went off.

Welp. My car is definitely included in this. Ruh roh.

What I'm curious about is why this specific period of time? Were the differentials different before this? The July 4th date might explain why no cars were produced for a period of time between June 24th and the second week of July.
This is the second major STOP/HOLD for the M2. There were a couple of hundred cars held a few months ago regarding a transmission issue.

More than likely someone left off an internal bolt or a bolt to mount the differential was overlooked. Along with the fact that roundels are falling off, there seem to be a lot of items occurring where attention to detail is overlooked.

Might be one of the reasons why my build has been held at the factory for over 3 weeks (assembly complete) perhaps...

I'll take any straw I can clutch at right now

I'm pretty sure there isn't a shelf. People mentioned old stock for iDrive too. The parts are delivered JIT. In Spartanburg they are taking them off trucks and dropping them off to the assembly line.

Though there may be a "virtual" shelf where the vendors keep delivering old stock until BMW tells them different.

It doesn't, I entered my vin and no recalls. I called BMW genius, they redirected me customer relations. I told them my vin and they do have a recall on my vin. They stated what has already been said, certain vehicles produced between May 12th- July 4th, 202 vehicles are affected

Ouch. That sucks. Just to clarify, 202 vehicles include M3/4/5/6 produced during that time so the number of M2's is likely a small fraction of that.

I would have thought so! I'm picking up my M2 on Thursday, and so far no word from the Performance Center telling me not to show up. My CA is 'checking' my VIN a couple of times each day, and so far it isn't showing a recall or stop sale. Perhaps BMW routed parts to Spartanburg to protect PCD commitments?

These situations are far more common that most would think. I follow the industry very closely and this happens a couple of times a months and it impacts every manufacture from Ferrari to Kia so its not something unique to BMW. These have become more common since the Chevy Cobalt scandal and the many law suits and federal fines that followed. The recall and stop sell rates a many times what they used to be. Of course most of the time its just some car sitting in the back lot waiting to go through PDI and that doesn't have a customer waiting.
